Application April 11, 1955, Serial No. 500,616 3 Claims. (CI. 88-41) This invention relates to improvements in means for mounting ornamental trim on spectacles.
It is an object of this invention to provide mounting means such as described, which is constructed and arranged in a novel manner whereby the wearers of. spectacles readily and easily may replace ornamental trims of .jselected styles or colors without the aid of persons skilled in the ophthalmic art or necessitating the use, of special tools.
It is another object of this invention to provide mounting means of this character, which is constructed and arranged sothat the him will be securely held inplace, subject however to ready and easy removal and replacement with the fingers ofone hand.
It is another object of this invention to provide mounting means of the character described, which is of minuscule proportions and installed on spectacles in such a manner that with or without the trim, it will be most inconspicuous and therefore will not detract from the appearance 'of the trim or spectacles.
It is another object hereof to provide mounting means such as described, in which a small part thereof although disposed in an inconspicuous position readily may be engaged and pushed in a manner facilitating the attachment of the trim from the spectacle.
It is a further object of this invention to provide mounting means such as described, which includes a novel socket member constructed so" that it may be fixed securely to spectacles in a position in which it is substantially concealed and will greatly facilitate the attachment and removal of the trim.
This invention possesses many other advantages and has other objects which may be made more easily apparent from a consideration of one embodiment of the invention. For this purpose there is shown one form in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. This form will now be described in detail, illustrating. the general principles of the invention; but it is to be understood that this detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, since the scope of the invention is best defined by the appended claims.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of spectacles embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an exploded fragmentary top plan view, on a greatly enlarged scale, showing the manner of assembling the mounting means on the spectacles and indicating the manner in which the trim is applied;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 on the same scale as Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. e
In accordance with this invention cooperable fastening elements are provided on spectacles 1 and the ornamental trim 2 respectively, whereby the latter may be detachably mounted on the spectacles.
United States Patent As here shown, the cooperable fastening elements arranged to mount the trim 2 on the frames for the lenses 4 of the spectacles. However, it is obvious that such elements may be arranged to mount the trim 2 on the temples 3a'of'the spectacles instead of on the frames,
or to mount the trim on both the temples and the frames, as the same fastening means are used in both cases.
The fastening elements mounted on the spectacles comprise tubular socket members 5 snugly mounted in openings 6 extending transversely through the frames 3. Each of the socket members 5 has an annular screw-type head 7 on one end adapted to seat in a counterbore 6a of the opening 6 so as to lie flush with the outer face of'the associated frame 3. This assures that the trim will lie close against the frames 3. The other end of each socket member is externally screw threaded as at 8 for reception of a nut 9 which bears against the inner face of the associated frame 3 to securely hold the socke member in place.
Itwill be noted with reference to Fig. 1 that the socket members 5 are exceptionally small, especially as to diameter. Thus, the annular heads 7 and the nuts 9 are equally small so that as awhole the socket members only the heads Tandthe nuts 9, which are most inconspicuous, are visible at front and rear ofkthe spectacle frames.
The fastening elements on the trim 2 consist of projections or pins 10 having heads 11 countersunk in the trim and soldered or otherwise fixed thereto. These pins are adapted to be mounted in the sockets 5 to detachably fasten the trim to the spectacle frames. A
As a means for assisting in the operation of attaching the trim 2, locating pins 12 are provided on the trim 2 for insertion into small openings 14 in the frames 3. The pins 12, also act to restrain rotative movement of the trim about the pins 10.
The socket members 5 are constructed and arranged to frictionally grip the pins 10 so as to hold the trim 2 against accidental dislodgement and at the same time permit of ready and easy removal and replacement of the trim when it is desired to substitute trim of a particular style or color.
Thus, each socket member 5 is provided between its ends With'longitudinal slots 15 angularly spaced about the axis of the socket member. The slotted portion of each member 5 is constricted circumferentially whereby the bore therethrough is'likewise constricted and there are formed a plurality of somewhat resilient gripping portions 17. These gripping portions on the sockets 5' assure that the pins 10 will be securely held in the sockets subject however to withdrawal readily when desired.
It should be noted by comparing the length of the socket member 5, shown in Fig. 2, with socket member in Fig. 3, that the socket members are originally longer than required to thread the nuts 9 thereon as this facilitates the application of the small nuts to the socket members. After the nuts are tightened on the socket members the threaded end portions projecting outwardly from the nuts are filed ofi, as will be apparent with reference to Figs. 3 and 4, thereby making these ends substantially flush with the nuts.
It should also be noted that each pin 10 is of such length that, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, it will project somewhat outwardly from the socket member 5 and nut 9, whereby it may be pushed inwardly to facilitate detachment of the trim from the spectacles.
We claim:
1. In fastening means for detachably mounting ornamental trim on spectacles, wherein said trim is provided with a mounting projection and said spectacles are provided with an opening in a part thereof: a socket mem- 3 ber insertable into said opening; said socket member having a bore for reception of said projection; and a head on one end of said socket member engageable with a surface of said spectacles adjacent one end of said opening; the other end of said socket member having external screw threads for cooperation with a nut for engaging {mental trim on spectacles, wherein said trim is provided with a mounting projection and said spectacles are provided with an opening in a part thereof: a socket member insertable into said opening; said socket member being of uniform cross section except at a point approximately centrally of its ends; said socket member having a bore open at both ends thereof for reception of said projection;
vsaid socket member having longitudinal slots spaced angularly about the axis thereof; said slots defining therebetween elongated resilient portions; each of said resilient portions being radially inwardly offset substantially throughout the lengththereof; and means at opposite ends of said socket member for securing said socket member in place.
3. In fastening means for detachably mounting ornamental trim on spectacles, wherein said trim is provided with a mounting projection and said spectacles are provided With an opening in a part thereof: a socket member insertable into said opening; said socket member having a through bore for reception of said projection; means axially spaced on said socket member operable to clamp against surfaces of said spectacles adjacent opposite ends of said opening to removably secure said socket member in said opening; and elongated resilient portions intermediate the ends of said socket member each of said resilient portions being joined at its ends to said socket member and inwardly offset therefrom substantially throughout its length as well as inclined in opposite direction from said ends; those portions of said socket member disposed between said axially spaced means and said ends of said elongated resilient portions being of substantially uniform diameter.
