PATENT EEicE.
LAON WVERTHEIMER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO APPEL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORIQN. Y.,
A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SKlRT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 769,970, dated September 13, 1904.
Application filed November 12, 1902. Serial No. 131,072. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAON WERTHEIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in skirt-holders, and the object in view is the production of such an article so formed as to present the appearance of a watch-fob, the attaching means being concealed.
It consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of. parts, as will appear from the following description and will be afterward set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a figure of a person illustrating the manner of using the skirt-holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the skirt-holder looking at the same from the rear. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, but shows the clasp open. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the holder with the pivoted portion of the clamp removed.
In the art to which the present invention relates it has been common to provide various 3 means for supporting a portion of the skirt by securing a supporting device at the waistband and having a biting portion engaging the skirt, the elements or members making up the biting portion being at all times exposed, and my object primarily in the present invention is to provide a skirt-supporter which shall embody all of the valuable features of prior supporters and in addition to provide such a construction as to have the appearance 4 of a watch-fob, the biting or engaging members being concealed.
To this end the device disclosed in the accompanying drawings is composed of a strip of supporting-ribbon 1, carrying at its upper end any suitable attaching-piece 2, adapted in operation to engage the waistband for supporting the said ribbon and the parts carried thereby. Intermediate the length of the ribbon 1 is positioned the biting or attaching element of the skirt-supporter, which consists 5 of a fanciful plate 3 of any preferred design, provided with a transversely-positioned strip 4, inclosing the ribbon 1, said strip carrying said member 8 being provided with parallel 5 lugs 9 9. extending at right angles to and outwardly from the main body of the member and inclosing similar lugs 10 10, extending inwardly from the strip 4, a suitable spring 11 being coiled about a shaft 12, which 7 pivotally connects said lugs, the opposite ends of said spring engaging said strip 4t and the upper free end of member 8, respectively, whereby said upper end of the member 8 is normally pressed rearwardly for causing the lower end of said member to clamp the cushion 7 tightly. It will now be apparent that pressure upon the upper free end of the member 8 will release the engagement of the lower end thereof and permit the insertion of the portion of a skirt to be supported. Anysuitable attaching-threads may be passed about the strip 4 and through the ribbon 1 for retaining the clamping device in position upon the ribbon or any other securing means may 5 be employed. It will now be seen that when applied to a skirt the ribbon 1 will completely conceal the biting element of the structure and only disclose the fanciful plate 3 and a portion of the ring 5 for giving the appear- 9 ance of a watch-fob, whereby a neat article of wearing-apparel is produced.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture an ornamental skirt-supporter com prising a front plate, clamping means pivoted in the rear of said plate, said clamp being concealed by said plate, and a ribbon passed back of the plate and extending above and below the same for producing the appearance of a watch-fob.
2. A device of the class described,- comprising a strip of suitable ribbon, and a clamping or biting device carried thereby, comprising a plate arranged outside the exposed face of said ribbon, a strip carried by said plate inclosing said ribbon so as to be concealed, and article-engaging means carried by said strip and also concealed.
3. A skirt-supporter, comprising a strip of ribbon, a plate arranged outside the exposed surface thereof, a strip inclosing said ribbon, an eye carried by said strip with the ribbon passed therethrough so that a portion of the eye is exposed, and skirt-engaging means carried by said strip in the rear of said ribbon.
4. A skirt-supporter comprising a strip of ribbon, a clamping or biting member carried thereby intermediate the length of the ribbon and in the rear thereof, and a plate connected with the clamping member and exposed to view above the same for giving the appearance of a Watch-fob.
5. As an improved article of manufacture, an ornamental skirt-supporter comprising an ornamental front plate, an inclosing strap secured to and spaced from the rear face of said front plate, clamping means pivoted to said the clamping member formed from said strap,
and a ribbon secured to said plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LAON WERTHEIMER.
