I W. P. MILLER. FASTENING DEVIOEIOR DRAPERIES. No. 508,735.
Patented Nov. 14, 1893.

WAQNINGTOIL 0. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM P. MILLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO W. H. MATTSON, OF SAME PLACE.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR DRAPERIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 508,735, dated November 14, 1893. Application filed April 4. 1893. Serial No. 468.996. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern/.- Beit known that I, WILLIAM P. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain ing manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved fastening device unclasped. Fig, 2, is a perspective view showing it clasped. Fig. 3, is a side view. Fig. 4, isa plan view of the blank before bending. Fig. 5, is a view showing my device applied to a scarf. Fig. 6, is a view showing the device applied to a scarf and the center portion of the scarf drawn through the device and puffed. Fig. 7, is a view showing a modification" of the pin; and Fig. 8, is a view showing the device made of wire.
Referring to Fig. 4, A is the blank made preferably of spring brass and the portion a, has an opening a. The blank is bent on the line'w, to. form a tongue a as shown in Fig. 1, the tip a being so proportioned that when it is pressed into the opening a it will pass through the opening and rest upon the end bar a*. Attached to the tongue at is a securing devicein the form of a pin 1), so bent that it will readily pass into the upholstery of the furniture and thus hold the fastening device in position.
To attach the scarf to the device all that is necessary is to open the clasp as shown in Fig. 1, and plait the scarf in the center and pass this center portion between the tongue. and body of the device and then spring the tongue into position as shown in Fig. 2. The device is then attached to the article of furniture and the scarf arranged as desired, as shown for instance in Fig. 5. The upper surface of the fastening can be ornamented in any suitable manner and can be plaited so as to give a neat appearance, but when it is desired tohide the fastening all that is necessary is to draw the center portion of the scarf through the opening a and puff it in the manner shown in Fig. 6. 5
' While I prefer to make the device of sheet metalit may be made of wire as shown in Fig. 8. The wire may be so bent that one end will form the tongue while the other end will form the pin.
In Fig. '7, Ivhave shown the securing pin b in the form of ascrew. This is specially applicable when used for attaching mantel lambrequins to covered niantels.
I claim as my invention 1. The fastening device for draperies consisting of the body portion and tongue made of a single piece of spring metal, the tongue portion being longer than the opening in the body portion and turned under said body portion and adapted to'pass therethrough and engage therewith, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a fastening device for scarfs or lambrequins of the body portion, and tongue, made of the single piece of spring metal, the tongue portion being longer than the opening in the body portion and turned under said body portion and adapted to pass therethrough and engage therewith, with the pin secured to thetongue, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM P. MILLER.
