ALLEN S. JACKSON, OF KOKOMO, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN F. MYERS, OF SAME PLACE, I
Letters Patent No. 76,767, dated April 1- 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTEBNS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ALLEN S. JACKSON, of Kokomo, in the county of Howard, and State of Indiana, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Lanterns and Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section.
Thes'zime letters are employed in both figures in the designation of the same parts.
My invention relates to an improvement in lamps, by means of which the flame is protected from the effect of curreiits of air, and which is therefore peculiarly adapted to use in lanterns; and it consists in the arrange ment of plates for diverting the air-currents, and introducing the air in constant quantities to the flame; also in the mode of attaching the chimney, and to the' mode of suspending the lamp from the guard-wiresof the lantern.
to be put into the body of the lamp A which is made flat on the bottom, so'that it may heuse'd as an ordinary house-lamp. Thelamp-hurner I3 is screwed into the base. I G is the wick-tube, and Dis the wick-regulator. E is a deflector, with a slotcorrcsponding to the form of the flame, attached to standards in such manner that its height may be regulated as required.
A flange-plate, I3, is carried upward, as shown in fig. 2, to support the perforated-annular plate F, which This lamp is designed for burning coal-oil, but other illuminating-fluids may be used. The oil is intended is perforated with small holes, as shown. An annular deflecting-plate, G, is attached to the plate F at thc' inner edge by a vertical ring, G. This plate G does not extend outwards to the flange B, but anarrow opening is left around its entire periphery between the two, so that the current of air, entering through the apertures in plate F, striking against the plate G, shall be deflected outwards, and, passing through the opening between it and plate B,.shall pass inwards through the space between them to the flame, both below and above the deflector'E. By this meitnssndden blasts are so interrupted that the air will be suppliedin'aconstant quantity to the flame.
The wire guards of the lantern are shown at H. The lower ends of all those guards are fastened to a wire ring (except two, shown at H) at the bottom, and all of them to a central ring. The wires H H are extended under the lower wire, and bent, as shown. The hooks are inserted through slots at F in the plate F, and, passing out through apertures in the flange-plate l3, serve to attach the lamp to the frame of-the lantern. I is the top of the lantern, through which the unconsumerl products of combustion may escape, and K is the bail.
The chimney L is fitted neatly into the circular opening in the plates F and G within the vertical ring G. The base of the chimney maybe surrounded by a collar. The top of the chimey fits into the lower concave surface of the top, I, which, while it supports the top of the chimney when the lamp is used with a lantern, may be removed when thelamp is used separately, the chimney then being supported only by its base.
WhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In combination with the buse'and burner of the lamp, the flange-plate B, perforated-annular plate F, and annular plate G attached thereto at G, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth,
2. A lantern combining in its construction the following elements: A base and lamp, a flange-plate, B, perforated annular plate F, deflecting annular plate Cr, ring G, chimney L, detachable frame H H, and top, I, said parts being respectively constructed and arranged in relation to each other substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALLEN S. JACKSON.
