IMPROVED BAND POR BALING COTTON.
@the Schrank' rtfrr'nh in in iigrst rtters zltent mit mating mi uf the simu.
'lO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCER:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. OLIVER, Jr., of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, in the State of Pour sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bands for Baling Cotton; and I do hereby declare that the following is u. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, und to ,the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in combining with hoop-iron a. screw-bolt and nut, for the purpose of forminga band for baling cotton, said hoop-iron,ser.ewbolt, und nut being constructed and arranged, with relation to each other, in the manner hereinafter described. v
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction und operation. In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification- Figure 1 is a top view of my improvement in bands for baling cotton.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, v
In the drawings, A represents the hoop-iron, which is provided with a series of openings, marked z'. B represents a small screw-bolt, provided with a screw-nut, marked C. The shank o of the bolt B is placed in an opening made near the end of the band and 4the projecting piece of the band is then bent down and under the head of the bolt, as indicated at a: in lig. 2. l
By'bending a small portion of the band A closely around the bead of the bolt, as above described, it will prevent the bolt from turning while securing the ends of the bands together by means of the serewlnut C.
' As the construction of my improvement in bands for baling cotton will be readily understood from the foregoing description, and by reference 'to the accompanying drawings, I will, therefore, proceed to describe its operation. i
The band is placed around the cotton-bale in the usual manner, und tbe cotton is compressed by the ordinary means. The ends of' the bands. are drawn together, and the shank o is put into one of the 'openings z'. The screw-nut is then screwed on the shank o until the ends of the band are pressed firmly together.
Bands constructed as herein described can be manufactured at a low cost, are durable, and not liable to become loose or detached from the cotton-bale. i
I wish it clearly understood that I do not claim broadly the use of hoop-iron, when in combination with a bolt and nut, for forming a. band. Y
Having thus described the natu-re', construction, and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my The band A, bent around the headof the bolt B, as indicated at x, said band being used in combination with tbe bolt B and nut C, constructed, arranged,` and operating substantially as herein described, and forthe purpose set forth.
