CHARLES PETERSEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
AMMUNiTlQN.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters latent No. 762,084, dated June 7, 1904.
Application filed October 19, 1903.
To all whom, it 7nm7 concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES PETERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Ammunition, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ammunition, and particularly ammunition intended for use in rapid-fire guns, where it is desired that the feed of the ammunition be continuous and automatic.
' It consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a cartridge with my attachment. Fig. 2 is a chain of same doubled up.
A represents a metal cartridge-shell, and 2 the bullet. The latter has embedded in it the ends of the soft pliant wire orwires 3, twisted centrally to form an open loop 4:, lying normally in a plane essentially at right angles to the axis of the bullet. The loop 41 is just large enough to. allow a cartridge to be inserted into it, but not to permit the flange 5 on the head of the cartridge to be drawn through. The flange is notched suitably, as at 6, to accommodate the wires from which the loop is formed, so that no protuberances beyond the periphery of the flange will be offered which might prevent the proper seating of the cartridge'in its chamber.
In practice the shells having their flanges notched as described are loaded with bullets provided with the wire extensions 3 and the cartridges linked together in the form of a chain, as shown in Fig. 2.
The chain may be of any length so that the cartridges may be drawn by suitable automatic mechanism into the gun-chamber and Serial No. 177,683. N0 model.)
fired successively, and the continuance of the fire need only to be limited by the length of the chain;
The chain maybe closely packed with the cartridges standing end for end in a box, and by grasping the end cartridge the others follow as the chain is drawn forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A new article of manufacture comprising a bullet having a wire loop extension with the ends of the loop embedded in the bullet.
2. A new article of manufacture comprising a bullet having a flexible loop extensionon its exposed end.
3. A new article of manufacture comprising a bullet having a pliant loop extension, the loop portion of said extension adapted to lie in a plane essentially at right angles to the axis of the bullet.
4. The improvement in ammunition comprising a plurality of connected cartridges, the connections between said cartridges comprising a flexible extension carried by the bullet of each cartridge and means on said extension to engage the peripheral flange on the shell of the succeeding cartridge.
'5. The improvement in ammunition comprising a plurality of cartridges linked together in the form of a chain, said'links consisting of a flexible extension carried by each .bullet and having a central loop to engage the shell of a succeeding cartridge.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES PETERSEN.
