PUL LEY-BLOOK- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,944, dated May 1904. Application filed February 13, 1904.. Serial No. 193,410. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE AGOBIAN, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, residing at the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pulley-blocks; andthe object of my invention is to provide a new and improved pulley-block which automatically holds the hoisting-rope whenever it is released, permits the load to descend when a suitable controllingrope is pulled, and brakes the pulley-sheaves more or less as long as the controlling-rope is pulled, so as to prevent the load from suddenly descending too rapidly, which pulleyblock is simple in construction, light, strong, and durable.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, Figure l is a vertical longitu dinal sectional view of my improved pulleyblock. Fig.2 is an elevation of thesame taken at the side. Fig. 3' is a sectional View of a friction-disk.
The frame is composed of the two side plates A, the intermediate plate B, the top cross-bolt C, and the bottom cross-bolt D; The suspension-hook E is swiveled on the top cross-bolt O, and a suitable eye F is suspended \from the bottom cross-bolt.
G represents sheaves mounted to turn on the central cross-bolt H, each of which sheaves is between a side wall A and the middle partition B. These sheaves may be of any suitable construction. On the cross-bolt J at some distance above the sheave two disks K center than at the ends, is pivoted between lugs 64 on the rim of each eccentric disk, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. An angular yoke frame or lever N, embracing the frame of the pulley, is mounted to rock on the ends of the shaft J and is provided with a cross-pin O on the free ends of the shorter shanks, which pin passes through curved slots P in the frame-plates A and B, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and also passes through apertures in the lower parts of the eccentric disks K. An eye Q, for attaching a controlling-rope, is formed on the outer closed end of said yoke-lever N. On the inner side of each side plate A a bar R is mounted to slide lengthwise of the frame and is provided with a longitudinal slot S, through which the pivot bolt H for the pulley-sheave G passes, so as to guide said plates in sliding up and down. Each bar R is provided at its upper end with a curved slot T, through which slot the crossbolt O passes. To the lower end of each sliding bar R a brake-shoe W is secured, so as to be below the corresponding sheave G, which brake-shoe is suitably attached to the lower end of the bar R.
When the parts are in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the eccentric disks K are in lowered position, in which they are held by their springs L, and when in this position jam against the hoisting-ropes passed over the sheaves, and the recesses in the grooves engage the strands or twists of the rope. The brake-shoes W are clear of the sheaves G. When the controlling-rope is pulled, so as to permit of lowering the load, the outer end of the yoke-lever N is pulled down, whereby the bolt O is swung to the left, Fig. 1, and thereby the eccentric disks are swung upward and away from the ropes, permitting the same to move and the sheaves to turn.
As soon as the ropes are now released the load.
will have a tendency to drop rapidly; but brake-shoes W are lifted by the bolt 0 as said bolt swings to the left and upward, and thereby the shoes are pressed against the rim of the sheave and brake the same. The rope controlling the lever N is then slightly slackened,
so as to permit the brake-shoes to clear the sheaves, but not to such an extent as to permit the eccentric disks J to jam the hoisting-rope.
In raising the load the sheaves rotate in the direction of the arrow w, Fig. 1, and automatically swing the disks K upward, so as not to jam the rope; but as soon as the pulling strain of the hoisting-rope is removed this rope immediately moves the sheaves in the reverse direction of the arrow, permitting the springs L to force the eccentric disks on the hoistingrope and locking the same.
When the eccentric disks K are in the po-' sitions shown in Fig. 1, so as to jam the ropes on the sheaves, the rollers a will be about in the position shown in Fig. 3; but when these eccentric disks are swung to the left and upward, so as to clear the rope, those parts of the eccentric carrying rollers 64 are swung down, so that these rollers prevent the rope from coming in contact with the grooved parts of these disks, and thus prevent undue chafing and wear of the rope.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pulley-block, the combination with a frame and sheaves, of an eccentric rope-locking disk, mounted above each sheave, springs attached to said disks and to the frame for the purpose of swinging the disks toward the sheaves, a pivoted lever on the frame and engaging said disks and serving to swing them from the sheaves, sliding bars on the frame, engaged by the abovementioned lever for shifting the disks and brake-shoes carried by said bars, substantially as set forth.
2. Ina pulley-block, the combination with a frame and sheaves, of two eccentric rope-locking disks mounted above the sheaves, springs attached to said disks and to the, frame for the purpose of swinging the disks toward the sheaves, a pivoted lever on the frame and engaging said disks and serving to swing them from the sheaves, longitudinally-sliding bars in the frame and guided in their movements by the sheave-bolt, which bars have curved slots at their upper ends, pins passing through said slots and through the eccentric disks, and connected with the lever for shifting the disks and brake-shoes attached to the lower ends of said bars, substantially as set forth.
3. In a pulley-block, the combination with a frame and sheaves, of eccentric disks for pressing the ropes on the sheave, a lever pivoted to the frame and engaging said disks for shifting them from the sheaves and brakeshoes operated from said lever, substantially as set forth.
4. In a pulley-block, the combination with a frame and sheaves, of an eccentric rope-locking disk mounted in the frame above each sheave, means for automatically moving said disks toward the sheaves, means for swinging the disk from the sheaves and a roller mounted transversely on the rim of each disk, substantially as set forth.
5. In a pulley-block, the combination with a frame and sheaves, of an eccentric ropelocking disk mounted above each sheave, which disk has its rim grooved and part of the groove recessed to conform to the twists of a rope, and a transverse roller at the upper. end of said recessed part ofthe groove, and means for automatically moving the disks toward the sheaves and means for swinging said disks from the sheaves, substantially as set forth.
