Bo it known that I, J. B. CASE, of Fletcher, in the county of Franklin, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and improved Lever-Purchase; land 'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable tl ose skilled in the art to make anduse the samerei`ercnce being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention 'relates to anew'and improved method of constructing a support for the fulcra of levers, and ol' combining the lever therewith, whereby a'motion of the arms of a lever is permitted in any direction. It consists of a block, provided on the upper endI with grooves or bearings to receive the trunnions of a leverplate, said block rotating on a pivot'in a statonarystand.- In the accompanying plate of drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, th'e lever being removed.
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional View of the same, with the lever upon thc same, taken in line arm, lig. 3.
vFigure 3 is a front view offrthe same.
Eigure 4 is a modiiication of the same. l

A is the stand. Bis tbe block. AC is a pivot on the stand A. D is the lever-plate. a are truunions on the same. al are rrooves or 'bearin s on block B to receive the trunnions a. a2 is an c e on the under side of the levcr-plate D. The stand A is made of cast iron or Wood, or other suitable material, circular in form, and
fof suiicicnt size to support the block B. Said stand A is provided with a. suitable shoulder or shoulders, to
-receive and give suitable bearings .to block B, and has upon the uppersde of the same, either a part thereof or rigidly secured thereto, a strong iron pivot projecting4 upwrrds from the centre of the stand A, as shown in the drawing, iig. 2. The pivot C may belof about the length ot' three inches, or ot' sucient length to support the block B upon the same.
The block B is a solid cast-iron block, cylindrical in form,'ot` about six inches in diameter, and about five inches in height, .or the same may be of' any convenient diameter and height, having two opposite sides slanting upwards, so as to leave a space at the t'op ouly'suticient to support the trnnnions a, and terminates also at the top in a. projection on eachside, in which ,is a groove, a, to receive thetrunnions a, and has also a cavity in the centre ol' the top to receive .the Vear ft2 ef the plate D. Suid block B is chambered out on the under side', so as to form a lip, which, fitting uponi-a shoulder on the stand A, serves, with the aid ofthe pivot C, to keep the block B in position on the stand A. Said block B is also bored out on the under side,in the centre of the same, so as to receive `the pivot C, and so asthat the block B will bo supported by and rotate easily upon the pivot C.
The lever-plate D is made also of cast iron, of any convenient length, as of the length of one foot, and of the width ol about three inches, and of the thickness of about one inch, or of any other width and thickness to support any lever bolted upon the same, Upon the under side of said plate D, and rigidly secured thereto, or a part ofthe sante, and lextending across the centre, and beyond the same, on each side, are the cast-iron trunnions a, which, resting in the grooves al of the block B, forni a' fulcrum, on which the lever-plate turns, so as that, in connection with the block B, rotating upon the pivot C, forming a universal joint, the arms of any lever upon the plate D may be made to take any desired position.' Upon the under side of the plate, andin the centre thereotl'is cast an eye or projection, a3, which seivesto strengthen and steady the plate D. Any lever may be secured by bolts, or otherwise, to the platclD. Thestand A mav be bolted to a stone-boat or A means ot' which the whole may be moved from place to place. y The operation is readily seen' irc.. the drawing and above description. At fig. 4 is shown the block B, provided with set-screws, E E, the points ot' which latter enter and traverse in an. annular groove, F, in the stand A, for the purpose of holding'thc lever fixed at any point of' itshorizontal motion, and also for the purpose oikcoping the block B from becoming displaced from the pivot C. l `(Lonstructcd as above described, it constitutes a strong and 'convenient lever other materials, the advantage o f which is that the arms of the lever may be ma I claim as new, and desire to secure hy Letters Patentl.
