Specification forming paris of Letters Patent No. 44, ISI, dated September 1.3, 1864.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be'it known that I, JAMEsGREENE, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State 'ot Rhode Island, have inventeda new and Improved Motive Power; andI do hereby declare that the following is is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable any person -skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, making a part of this specitication, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal'vertical seetionof my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View ot' the same, partly in section.

This invention consists in a series of radially-sliding rolling weights attached to the sides ot a wheel, in combination with stationn ary camsin such a manner that by the action ofthe cams said weights are held in such a position toward the wheel that the weights on one side overbalance those on the other, and consequently a continuousrotary motion ofthe wheel will be effected.
It consists also in` the use of a double set of adjustable cams, in combination with the sliding weights and revolving wheel in such a manner that by moving the outer cams on a carriage in a radial and the inner cams in suitable guides in a circular direction the motion of the wheel can be readily reversed whenever it may be desired.
A represents a wheel, made of wood or any other suitable material, and mounted on a shaft, B, which has its bearings in suitable boxes in a frame, O, which maybe made of wood or metal or of both combined, as may be deemed most convenient. Secured to the arms of these wheels are a serious of radial boxes, a, wh-ich form the guides for the shanlis b of the rolling weights D. Suitable stops c at the end of the sha-nks limit the radial motion ofthe shanks and of theweightsin either direction.
E E F' are cams which govern the position of theweights D, and by these cams said a position that the weights on one side of the wheel overbalance those on the opposite side, and consequently a rotary motion ofthe wheel will be produced. The cams E serve to push the weights out, and they are sustained by circular shoes d, which are suspended from bolts e, that are secured inthe upper part of the frame O. Said cams may be fastened in said shoes by clamps f and levers g serve to adjust the same toward one side or toward the other, according to the direction in which the wheel is to run. These levers are pivoted to brackets h, which are secured tothe longitudinal beams h' of the frame C, and they connect by means ot' links i with oscillating arms i',
which are pivoted to the beams h', and eX- tend into loops j fastened to the rams E7 as clearly shown iu the drawings. The cams F F' extend upon the sides of the wheel A, and they serve te force the sliding weights in. They rise from carriages G G', which run on a track formed by the longitudinal beams h' of the frame U. These carriages are connected by straps L, and a weight, H, suspended from either end serves to pull them toward one side or toward the other, according to the direction in which the wheel is intended to rotate.
`In the drawings the cams E F F' are shown in that position which they will occupy if the wheel rotates in the direction of the arrow marked thereon in Fig. l. In that position the cams F' are so close to the center of the wheel that the rolling weights on that side of the wheel will be pushed in, and at the same time the weights on the opposite side of the wheel will be pushed out by the action of the cams F, causing the wheel to rotate in the direction as above described, and the motion of the wheel will continue as long as the weights on one side will overbalance those on the other.
