TRY-SQUARE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,031, dated May 1'7, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SMITH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairlield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Try-Squares; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in try-squares, and has for its object to produce a very simple and eective device of this description; and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, such as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then speciiically designated by the claim.

Heretot'ore devices of this description have been constructed by securing a thickeningpiece to one face of the handle portion of the square; but both side edges of said piece have been coincident with the side edges of the handle portion of the square, so that no benefits could be obtained from any graduation along the outer side edge of said handle, and, moreover, the thickening-piece itself has been made perfectly plain, with no graduations appearing upon the same.

My improvement aims to provide the usual form of try-square with a thickening-piece applied to its handle, so that the device may be used after the manner of the ordinary T- square, while at the same time the efficiency of the main portion oi' the try-square is not lessened in the slightest degree.

ably made from sheet metal, with the extremities bent at right angles and terminating in rivets d. This piece c is secured to the handle portion Z) by assembling' these rivets within perforations e in the blade, the extreme ends of said rivets being then headed in the usual manner. The inner edge of the piece c is flush or coincident with the inner edge of the handle portion t; but the width of the piece c is considerably less than the width of this handle portion, so that the outer edge of the handle portion b projects beyond the outer edge of the piece c, and the length of this piece c is less than the length of the handle portion, so that there is quite a clearance between the inner end of the piece c and thc outer edge oi' the blade a near the point where said blade and handle portions join. I prefer also to make this piece c of such length that there is a clearance between the outer end of said piece and the outer end of the handle portion.

The blade and the handle are graduated on one face along' the outer and inner edges, while on the other face these graduations appear except along the inner edge of the handle portion; but both the inner and outer edges of the piece c are graduated, so that the efiiciency ot' the try-square is not lessened.

Owing to the fact that the outer edge of the handle portion projects beyond the outer edge of the piece c, the elficiency of the try-square is increased, since this leaves the entire outer edge oi' the handle portion free to be inserted within conlined angles, and in this connection I would also state that the clearance between the outer edge of the blade and the inner end of the piece c renders my improvement of great practical utility, particularly in view oi' the fact that the outer edge of this piece c is graduated.

I do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, any construction whereby there is a clearance left between the inner end of the piece c and the outer edge of the blade b, nor do I wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, the thickening of one face of the handle portion of a try-square by means of a sheetmetal or other strip applied thereto; but
