Description
UNITED STATES Patented May 10, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
SINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,457, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed May 22, 1903. Serial No. 153,234. lNo model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. MELONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sinks, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sinks; and its object is to provide an improved form of sink which shall be thoroughly cleanly.
My invention consists of certain novel forms of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters refer to the same parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my device. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
The body portion of my device is of the usual form, as indicated at 1. A pocket 2 is formed at the drainage end of this tank and is provided with a rib 3, running entirely therearound. The rib 3 is of such shape that it unites with the face of the pocket and main body in a smooth and easy curve, thereby preventing any accumulation of dirt either above or below the rib. A grating 4 is so formed as to fit snugly on the rib 3 and is provided with openings 5 of such proportion as to readily pass any ordinary-sized pieces of waste food as may be emptied in the sink; An upwardly-extending flange 6 forms a prolongation of the sides and back end of the grating and is so formed as to closely engage the sides of the body portion and join those sides to the face of the grating with a smooth and easy curve. A hell 7 is formed in the bottom of the pocket 2, and I prefer to form this pocket with a sloping bottom 8 and locate the bell at about the middle thereof. A grating 9, having perforations line enough to keep out all but the most minute particles of waste food, is held over the bell. The bell is arranged in any desired manner for connection to a wastepipe.
In operation of my device it is plain that whatever may be thrown in the sink will be washed through the large openings in the upper grating and accumulate in the pocket 2. From thence it may be readily removed by the simple operation of lifting the grating and using the ordinary sinkscraper. This is greatly facilitated by the fact that my sink has no interior angles, but the various surfaces are joined with the easy curves shown. The lower strainer being in the middle of the inclined bottom, the waste matter is prevented from accumulating on the strainer, and thus flooding the pocket or sink.
It is thus obvious that my device possesses the advantages of thorough cleanliness and ease of operation, since no waste material remains in the body portion and such as accumulates in the pocket is readily removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I- claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a sink, the combination of a body portion, a transversely-extending pocket located beneath the body portion, a rib located on the interior of the pocket adjacent the upper end thereof and in line with the under face of the said body portion, a strainer resting on said rib and extending on its upper face substantially flush with the upper face of said body portion, said strainer having a flange formed integral with its rear Wall and its side walls, said flange tapering upwardly so as to gradually meet the front and side Walls of the body portion, a bell located centrally of and be neath said pocket and communicating therewith, astrainer having perforations of considerably less size than the first-named strainer, supported on said bell and having its upper face flush with the upper face of the pocket.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT J. IVIELONEY.
In presence of JAs. J. MoAEEE, H. J. LEVIS.
