Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN O. BRINGKERHOFF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-CLOSETS.
lSpecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,896, dated January 19, 1875; application filed December 12, 1874.
\ To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN O. BEINGKEE- HOFF, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Closets, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of a water-closet basin to which my improvement has been applied, partly in section, to show the construction; and Fig. 2is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: w, Fig. 1.
`Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents the basin, which may be made of earthenware or other suitable material, and with the dischargeorice of which is conneeted the end of the discharge-pipe, in the usual manner. Around the upper edge of the basin A is formed a ange, a', which projects outward and upward to form a seat for the rin g-pipe B, from which the water is discharged into said basin Athrough numerous smallholes formed inthe inner lower side of the said pipe B, which pipe B should project inward a little beyond the walls of the basin A. With a short branch pipe, b', formed upon the pipe B, and projecting through a notch in the ange a', is connected the end of the inlet water-pipe, which is designed to be provided with a valve, in the usual way, to regulate the inow of water. The pipe B is covered, and at the same time secured in place, by a ring-cap, C, which fits over the pipe B and the iiange a of thebasin A, the outer flange of said cap being notched to receive the branch pipe b. The cap G may be secured in place by straps D, the upper ends of which are secured to the outer flange of said cap by pins or bolts d1 passing` through eyes formed upon said end and anged. The lower ends ofthe straps D are secured by pins or bolts dzpassing through eyes formed upon the said ends, and formed upon or connected with the lower part of the basin A; or the said cap may be secured in place in any lother convenient manner.
By this construction, when water is admitted into the pipe B it will be discharged upon all sides of the basin A, so that the entire inner surface of said basin will be thoroughly washed, cleaning it much better and with less water than when the water is admitted at o ne side of the basin in the usual way.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The ring-cap C, in combination with the perforated rin g-pipe B and the upper edge of -a water-closet basin, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the straps D and pins or bolts d1 d2 with the ring-cap C, the perforated ring-pipe B, and the basin A of a water-closet, substantially as herein shown and described.
EDWIN O. BRINGKERHOFF.
