Be it known that I, MAHLON MATLACK, of Bridesburg,(Philadelphia,) in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new,and improved. Lamp-Black Apparatus; and I do-hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and usla the same,reference being had' to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, inv which-- Figure 1 represents-a longitudinal vertical section of my improved lamp-black apparatus.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on the plane of the line a: x, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an under side view of the block in which the tire-pan is set.

I This invention relates to a new machine for producing lamp-black from suitable material, andr consists in the construction and'arrangernent of the furnace and of the detaining-devices, by which the lamp-black is separated from the gases, and ofthe roof of the structure, all parts being so arranged that the operation of the apparatus willbe complete, that no lamp-black will be allowed to escape with the gases, that no explosive gases can `accumulate in any portion of the apparatus, and that the i'ire cannot reach any combustible portion of the apparatus.
A, in the drawing, represents the building or structure in which the` gases containing the lamp-black areA liberated. The roof of the building is made of slate or sheet-metal plates fastened to wooden beams. The slate or metal plates B B are fastenedto the under side of the k wooden beamsl C, as shown in lrigs. 1 and 2, for
the purpose of preventing the flame in the building from reaching `the wooden beams. A The slates or plates B are either nailed to the beams by means of nails a a clinched over the beams, as shown, or they'are supported by metal bars 6 Z2, which are by means of staples er bolts cc suspended from the beams, as is also clearly shown in'g. 1, or otherwise. In this manner such dangerous gases will be burned, and they can therefore not explode under the furnace, which they do if-conned in the ordinary manner. V'Ihey then will rise in the.cha1nber" `E. Y, In the chamber E is arranged a perforated damper, I, which has a plate, Z, elevated somewhat above its hole, as shown. When the gas strikes against the`. plate Z, i't is suddenly delected, and a large portion of the lamp-black contained in it is discharged upon the damper. The same effect is produced by the plate j. The damper can be turned whenever desired to discharge its-load of black upon the floor of the chamber El A. series of. such dampers, I, may bevused, one abovethe other, if'desired. From the uprightv chamber E, the gas enters a horizontal duc, J, iivhieh the detaning-shelves mm are arranged alternately on the top and 1cottom ofthe flue, as sh'own. By the same the last particles of the lamp-black are caused to leave `the gas which then escapes through a pipe, a. Instead of the upper arrangement of the air-chamber E and it's appendages, or in conjunction with the same, may be employed a fan, L. lIhe same would serve to draw the gas down and to force it into 'a porous bag or vessel, M, through the walls of which the lamp-black cannot pass, -while the gas can easily escape through the same. In this manner the lamp-black would at once be all thoroughly separated from the gas.
'- Having thus described my invention, what I claim` as new, and desire to secureV by Letters Patent, is
1. Suspending the slates or sheets, which form the root` of a lamp-black apparatus, from the (voeden beams C C ofv the same, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. Making the crown of the furnace lowl above the pan H', and gradually or suddenly raising it at some distance from the pan, as set forth. 4
3. Providing the bed G, which supports the pan H, -with a gas-cl1annel,f, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
4. Thednclined plate j, arranged across the opening to the dead-air vchamber E of a lump-black apparatus, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
5. The perforated damper I, when provided ivith'a plate, Z, above the perforation, as specified.
6. The combination, with the dead-air chamber E having the damper I, of the horizontal flue J having the alternate up-and-down shelves m, as set forth. v
7. The arrangement of the fan L, or its equivalent, by which the gas is forced into a porous vessel or bag in which the lamp-black is detained, as set forth.
