Description

L. G MARSHALL Furnace for Des ulphurizing Ores.
Patented Sept. 1 1863.
7mm wisw lrrLhhngnpMr. Walhinghm, u. c.
of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylments in Tubed Furnaces for Desulphurizing room to operate the slides, open and close the UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOOMIS G. MARSHALL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ANDREW OOGHRAN, OE SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURNACES EOR DESULPHURIZING ORESL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,786, dated September 1, 1863.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LooMIs G. MA sHALL,
Vania, have invented new and useful Improvethe Various Ores; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention is the arrange ment andcombination of any number of tubes with top and bottom slides,'the fuel surroundingthe tubes between the top and bottom plates, and a chimney with damper, for the purpose of desulphurizing ores.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation as follows.
I erect my furnace of brick, stone, boileriron, or any proper material, above the ground, on side walls sufficiently high to facilitate the work and to give the workman tubes, and to discharge their contents at the time required.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view; Fig. 2, a front View, and Fig. 3 the damper.
A represents the side walls of the square or oblong-shaped furnace; B, the bottom or bed, having underneath flanged or grooved parallel plates 0, extending the whole length of the furnace, in which the slides D operate. The slides cover the open bottoms of the vertical tubesE, each tube having its respective slide. Over the tops of the tubes E is a floor,
G, the same as the bed B, which supports the upright position of the tubes E, and has its corresponding grooved plates 0 and slides D, which cover the tops of the tubes E. H is the furnace or fuel-chamber, between the top or floor G and bottom B, having its fire-doors I in front, the tubes E, standing in the midst, and altogether surrounded by the fire. At the back side of the fuel-chamber or furnace H are ordinary square apertures, which are opened or closed by a damper, J, operating laterally at the bottom of the chimney K. The chimney K is of a triangular shape the whole width of the furnace at the bottom, and tapering narrower to its top or apex.
This form and construction of furnace enable me to desulphurize the various ores and work all the precious metals, also to calcine ores, dry clay, and burn lime, and keep up a continual discharge of the products by filling the tubes E at the top with the ores and their proper fluxes, then closing the tops of the tubes E with the slides D, and'when ready to be withdrawn the lower slides D are drawn and the products are discharged underneath.
I do not claim the use of tubes and slides for opening and closing the endsof the tubes, as heretofore used in furnaces; but
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The'arrangement of vertical tubes and slides ina square furnace, in combination with the parallel plates 0 and the triangular-shaped chimney K, with its regulating-damper J, arranged and combined as herein described.
LOOMIS G. MARSHALL.
W'itnesses:
W. W. DOUGHERTY, EZRA HAND.
