PATENT OFFICE. Y
ORIN J. LINENDOLL AND ARTHUR T. HOUGHTEN, OF DETROIT,
MICHIGAN, ASSIGNORS TO THE UNION SPECIALTY 00., OF DE- TROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED AUTOMATIC SHOWER AND VAPOR BATH ADJUSTABLE FRAME.
SJPE(JIZEICATION- forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,933, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed. April 20, 1903. Serial No. 153,579. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
-Be it known that we, ORIN J. LINENDOLL and ARTHUR T. HOUGHTEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, Wayne county, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Shower and Vapor Bath Frames, of which the following is a full specification. I
This invention relates to shower and vapor bath apparatus, and has special reference to an improved type of adjustable frame readily convertible from one use to the other, the same being adapted to support and carry the necessary auxiliaries for a shower-bath or for a vapor-bath.
To this end the invention contemplates a frame of the character indicated possessing special utility as a domestic apparatus for either children or adults.
WVith these and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
The essential features of the invention involved in the adjustable mounting of the canopy-support and the folding construction of the main supporting-frame are necessarily susceptible of modification without departing from the scope of the invention; but the preferred embodiment of the latter is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the apparatus adapted for use as a shower-bath. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same construction converted into a vapor-bath apparatus.
Like reference-letters designate corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out the invention the main supporting-frame is constructed so as to be easily collapsed or folded to occupy a small compass when not in use. This main supporting-frame essentially comprises a tubular frame-upright A, within the open upper end of which telescopes a vertically-adjustable holding-rod B, provided with a series of spaced catch-notches c, any one of which is adapted to be engaged by the looped end of the inclined brace-bail g. The inclined brace-bail g is-thus adapted for an adjustable interlocking connection with the holding-rod B, and the opposite lower ends of the said bail are suitably connected with the horizontally arranged vertically adjustable canopy-support f. This canopy-support f is preferably in the form of a ring frame, as indicated by the outline in Fig. 2, and is rigidly connected at one side with an adjusting collar f, slidably mounted upon the frame-upright A and held fast in its adjusted position thereon through the medium of the binding-screw or equivalent device f.
The construction described provides for the vertical adjustment of the canopy-frame f according to the height of the person bathing, and the vertical adjustment for the holdingrod B is permitted by reason of the same telescoping in the tubular frame-upright, said holding-rod being held fast in its adjusted position by a binding-screw b. In addition to the frame-uprightA the main supporting-frame includes as a part thereof a foldable leg-frame C, essentially comprising a plurality of leg members 0 and folding braces 0. The leg members are pivotally connected at their upper extremities to the runner-bracket 0 slidably working on the frame-upright A and held fast thereon when the legs are opened through the medium of the binding-screw 0 The folding braces 0 are pivoted at their outer ends to the legs 0 and at the inner ones to a fixed collar a, fitted to the lower extremity of the frame-upright A. When it is desired to fold or collapse the apparatus, the screw 0 is loosened to admit of the runner-bracket c to slide upward on the frame-upright. In both uses of the frame the canopy-support or ring frame f is designed to have loosely suspended therefrom a canopy or shield E, of suitable waterproof material, loosely hung. upon the support f through the medium of hanger rings or equivalent runners 6 The said canopy or shield E is designed to hang over the bathing-tub F in the use of the apparatus as 'a shower-bath and is provided with a vertical opening 6', temporarily closed by means of buttons or equivalent fastenings, as plainly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings."
In the adaptation of the invention for shower-bath purposes the holding-rod B is designed to have suitably mounted thereon,
through the medium of the cap d and the.
- intermediate point a cut-off clamp d preferably in the form used in connection with syringe-tubing. This construction permits of the optional use of a et-spray or showerspray, as the bather may desire.
' In the use of the invention as a vapor-bath apparatus the water-tank and its fittings are omitted, and over the top of the canopy-support or ring'frame f is suitably fitted a hood E, having the usual head-opening and a buttoned or other suitably-fastened slit.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and many advantages of the herein-described frame will be readily apparent without further description, and it will be understood that many changes in the form,
proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is Y 1. In a bath apparatus, a main supportingframe having a foldable leg-frame and an upright holding-rod member, a horizontally-arranged canopy-support having an adjustable mounting upon the main supporting-frame, and a brace arranged to be connected with the canopy-support and adjustably engaged with the holding-rod member. v
2. In a bath apparatus, the combination of a frame-upright, a vertically-adjustable holding-rod carried by said upright and provided with notches, and a vertically-adjustable canopy-frame having a bracing-bail engaged with said notches.
3. In a bath apparatus, a tubular frame-upright, a vertically adjustable holding rod mounted in the frame-upright and provided with a series of notches, a vertically-adjustable canopy-support having a collar member slidably and adjustably arranged on the frameupright, and an inclined bracing-bail connected with the canopy-support and adjustably engaging said notches. v
4:. y In a bath apparatus, a frame-upright carrying a canopy-support, a movable runnerbracket slidably and adjustably working upon the upright, a fixed collar fitted to the upright, and a foldable leg-frame having leg members pivoted to the runner bracket and folding braces pivotally connected respectively with the runner-bracket and said fixed collar.
5. i In a bath apparatus,a frame-upright having a leg-frame at its lower end, a vertically-
