PATENT OFFICE.
MOURNIN N. HALL AND LEVI D. MOHLER, OF MoPl-IERSON, KAN SAS.
FCLOTHES-DRAINER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N6. 756,112, dated. March 29, 1904. Application filed June 1'7, 1903. Serial No. 161,942. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MouRNIN N. HALL and LEVI D. MOHLER, citizens of the United States; residing at McPherson, in the county of McPherson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Drainers, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention aims to provide a drainingreceptacle for use in connection with the ordinary clothes-boiler, and in its specific form embodies peculiar securing means disposed upon thesaid receptacle whereby the same may be readily applied and conveniently disposed upon the boiler, at the same time being adapted to be quickly removed.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowl edge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and draw ings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which. 0
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boiler, showing the lid thereof disposed transversely in position for use as a draining-receptacle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts arranged Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lid, showing more clearly the engaging means thereon for holding same in position when used as adrainer. Fig. 4: shows a modified form of engaging means for holding the drain-receptacle in position.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
As premised hereinbefore, the invention is adapted for use upon the ordinary top of boiler 1 and also the usual form of lid 2. The lid 2 is preferably of a conical form, being provided with aflange 3 upon its edges, which is received by the upper portion of the boiler when the lid is disposed so as to close the same. It is very desirable should the lid be used as a drainer that the flange 8 be of increased width, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. so that the lid may more readily'hold the clothes. The boiler has a bead 4 at the edge of the opening therein,-
which is formed in the accustomed manner namely, by turning the material from which the boiler is made upon a continuous'piece of wire which extends entirely about the edge thereof. Perforations or openings 5 are located upon a plate 10 upon the inner side of the lid of the boiler in order to permit the water which drains from the clothes after having been disposed within the drainer-recepta- I cle to pass back into the boiler. These openings are arranged at a somewhat intermediate point between the ends ofv the drainer-receptacle and are provided both upon the body of the lid and upon the flange?) thereof. When the lid is used as a drainer, the same is dis posed transversely of the boiler, as most clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and in order to secure the lid in the position illustrated engaging means are provided. These engaging means consist, preferably, of a series of hooks 6, disposed at intervals upon the upper side of the lid and longitudinally thereof. These hooks are adapted to engage the bead & upon one side of the boiler, and a latch device is provided upon the opposite portion of the upper side of the lid to cooperate with the hook 6 to secure the lid by engagement with the bead 4 upon the opposite side of the boiler. The latch device mentioned consists of a U-shaped engaging member 7 which member 7 is rigidly secured in place. Pivoted to the lid in any suitable manner is a lever 8, which is provided at one end with an eccentric cam 9, which cam engages beneath the head 4 when the lever 8 is manipulated in a properdirection.
The modified form of securing means is illustrated in Fig. 4, consisting simply in providing a series of hooks similar to the series 6 before described instead of the latch means. The purpose in having a plurality of hooks is obvious, being to adapt the lid or draining receptacle for application to different sizes of receptacle. The hook 6 may be rigidly afiixed to the lid by any means found most suitable. The conical form of the lid causes same to rest in an inclined position, and this is very advantageous, since drained water concentrates toward the openings 5 in the receptacle.
In using the modified form of engaging means (shown in Fig. 4) it is necessary that the corresponding hooks adjacent the ends of the receptacle be engaged beneath the body 4 by a longitudinal movement of the said receptacle, with the said hooks disposed so that as the receptacle is moved toward the central portion of the boiler the said hooks will ride beneath the head.
The invention is extremely simple. The draining-receptacle may be disposed very conveniently, so that the clothes may be lifted directly from the boiler into the same, which is of especial importance.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. The combination with a holding-receptacle, of a drainer-receptacle, engaging means disposed adjacent one end of the drainer-receptacle, other engaging means comprising a U-shaped engaging member disposed upon the opposite end portion of the drainer-receptacle, and a cam-lever pivoted to the U- shaped engaging member aforesaid for cooperation therewith to positively lock the drainer-receptacle to the holding-receptacle.
2. The combination with a holding-receptacle, of a drainer-receptacle, engaging means disposed adjacent one end of the drainer-receptacle, engaging means disposed adjacent the opposite end of the drainer-receptacle, and lock means cooperating with the lattermentioned engaging means for positively securing the same in engagement with the holding-receptacle.
3. In adrainer for clothes, the combination with a holding-receptacle having bead thereon, a drainer-receptacle of conical form disposed upon the said boiler and provided with openings, a series of hooks disposed adjacent one end of the said receptacle and adapted for engagement with the bead upon one side of the holding-receptacle, a U-shaped engaging member disposed upon the opposite end portion of the receptacle and adapted to engage the bead upon theopposite side of the holding receptacle, and an eccentric cam adapted to cooperate with the U-shaped member to positively lock the drainer-receptacle in position upon the holding-receptacle.
In testimony whereof We aifix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
