Treble Tree.
Patented March. 10, 1868.

Letters Patent .Na-75,440, dzted March 10, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN VTREBLE-'I'RER I @te Srlgemle :mmh tu im time teiten @anni mit mating gmt nt tte sume.
Be it known that I, W. W'. MATHEWS, of Yates City, county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Three-Horse Double-Tree, or Treble-Tree; and I do hereby declare that the following is a.
4full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part explanatory of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical view of treble-tree.
Figure 2 is a. side -View of adjustable draught-bolt.
Figure 3 shows adjustablevcoupling.
The nature of my invention consists in using three. horses abreast, by attaching the outer single-trees to the outer ends of two drawing-bars, the inner ends of which are coupled by means of proper staples, working in each other, and to this coupling is attached the middle horse or single-tree. Also, in overcoming any binding friction caused by unequal draught, by means of an adjustable draught-bolt.' v
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will add that the draught-bars a a are of such length, and so hung or coupled that the power of each horse is transferred to theresistance without interfering withthe drawing of either of the other horses. Any binding friction caused by unequal pull of team, is counteracted by the use of the curved hammer or draught-hook b b, the upper end of which is sustained' by the strap c. The curved hook b passes through the front part of drawing-bars a a, and through back part of frame, as shown in fig. 3. The inner ends of the draught-bars a a are coupled by means of iron staples, d and e, the eye of one being vertical, and the other horizontal, so that they may work in Veach other.
What I claim as my invention, and desire` to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The staple-attachment d e of the inner ends of drawing-bars a a and 2. The curved hook Z?, shown in iig. 2, each and all substantially as shown, and in combination as and for the uses and purposes herein expressed.
. W. W. MATHEWS.
