Description

No. 640,664. Patented Ian. 2, I900.
F. W. KEY.
WHIFFLETREE HOOK.
[Application filed June 21, 1899.;
(No Model.)
ghzeaaey I A I 'v UNITED STATES FRANCIS W. KEY, OF
STAUNTON, GEORGIA.
WHlFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed June 21, 1899.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS WESLEY KEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staunton, in the county of Berrien and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree-Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improved Whiftletree-hook for use on singletrees; and the object is to provide a simple and efieotive device of this character that may be instantly attached to the tree without the aid of tools.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved Whittletree-hook. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device applied to a singletree.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
l'denotes the curved shank, the free end of which terminates in a longitudinal shoe 2, the parallel walls 3 3 of which are formed with alined orifices 4 t to receive the transverse bolt 5, and the opposite end of said shank is pivoted to the hook member 6 by means of the hinge-joint 7. The shank 8 of the hook member conforms in shape to the curved shank 1, and it is provided with two or more gripping-teeth 9 9, and when the Patent No. 640,664, dated January 2, 1900.
Serial No. 721,331. (No model.)
straight portion 10 of the bill 12 is secured in the shoe 2 by the bolt 5 these teeth are forced into the Wood and prevent the iron from slipping on the tree.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A Whiffletree-hook comprising two oppositely-curved members having a hinged connection, one of said members being formed with a shoe and the other with a bill-hook, and means for securing said hook and shoe together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A Whiffletree-hook comprising the shank 1 formed with the shoe' 2 provided with longitudinal parallel and transversely-orificed Walls 3 3, in combination with the bill-hook 6 hinged to said shank and provided with the inwardly-projecting teeth 9 9, and the bolt 5 adapted to secure said bill-hook in said shoe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS WV. KEY.
