Description
(MddeL) 4 T FEYEN. DOUBLE TREE PROTECTOR. V No. 317,105. Patented May 5, 1885.
UNITED A STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS FEYEN, OF DUBIIQUE, IOWA.
DOUBLE-TREE PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 31'7,105, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed April 30, li-84. (Model) To It whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS FEYEN, of the city and county of Dubuque, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double-Tree Protectors; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention has for its object to providea practical, economical, and efficient mode of fastening the sin gle-trees to the double-tree by means of an ordinary clevis-pin without boring through or in any manner weakening the double-tree; and, further, my invention furnishes convenient eye-holes to which the staychains of the wagon may be attached.
For the better understanding of my invention, I call attention to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents one end of a double-tree with my protector and an ordinary clevis, C, and pin B attached. Fig. 2 represents my protector detached. Fig. 3 represents a side view of my protector, showing ring to which the stay-chains of the vehicle are attached.
Like letters denote corresponding parts in all of said figures.
B represents my protector, which may be made of wrought or malleable iron,) consisting of the main body with arms a a, for the purpose of attaching it to the double-tree. There is also cast upon it a projection, E, which enters the evener or doubletree for the purpose of taking the strain off of the screws in case of side pull. Through the center of the protector is a hole, through which a clevis-pin passes to pivot the clevis to the double-tree, and at the back of the protector I casta ring, to which the stay-chains are attached, instead of attaching them in the ordinary way.
F in the protector B. To the ring D of the I protector I attach the ordinary stay-chains, 3] 5 f1 connecting with the axle of the vehicle.
By the use of my protector it will be readily seen that the double-tree is not weakened by boring holes through it in order to fasten the clevis and the single-trees to the double-tree, and all the strength of the doub1e-tree is preserved. It will also be observed that the ring- D furnishes a convenient, safe, and durable I eye-hole to which the stay-chains of the double-tree can be attached, and also thereby doing away with the necessity of boring holes through the double-tree for thepurpose of put- I ting in an eyeboltfor the stay-chain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A double-tree protector having the lug E, arms a a, and hole F, for attaching clevispin, all placed upon a double-tree and operated substantially as described, and for thepury I poses shown.
2. In a double-tree protector, the combination of the plate B, having lug E, arms a a,
clevis-pin hole F, and eye-hole D, to which stay-chains are attached, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS FEYEN.
Witnesses:
HENRY MIoHEL, CHRISTIAN KRAKOW.
I then attach to this an ory
