PATENTED JAN. 26, 1904.
K. A. JOHNSON. FRUIT JAR HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 7. 1903 N0 MODEL.
lllllllllllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN IHHIIIIIHIIHIHI NIH co. Puc'ro-u'mm WASMINGYO Patented January 26, 1904.
KATE A. JOHNSON, OF LORENE, WASHINGTON.
FRUIT-JAR HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,654, dated January 26, 1904. Application filed May 7, 1903. Serial No. 156,121. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATE A. JOHNSON, aeitizen of the United States, residing at Lorene, in the county of Lincoln and State of IVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for holding and clamping a fruit-jar, bottle, or other container while the same is being filled and closed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and very eificient in operation.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder. showing the same in use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 and 2 denote the two handles or clamping members, provided intermediate their ends with the curved jaws 3, which are provided with a lining or facing 1, of rubber orleather, to prevent slipping of the jar or bottle A. One end of each of these members is provided with a slit or cut 5, and their opposite ends are formed with hand-grips 6.
7 denotes a connecting-link, one end of which is pivoted in the slit 5 in the member 1. The opposite end of said link passes through the slit 5 in member 2 and is formed with a-series of apertures 8, one of which is engaged by the removable pin 9 in order to pivot the link and said member together and to permit of their adjustment to accommodate jars or bottles of different sizes.
10 denotes a ratchet-bar pivoted to the clamping member2, adjacent thehandle 6, and projecting through a recess 11, formed in the clamping member 1. The top of this opening or recess 11 is closed by the plate 12, which has a bent portion 13 adapted to be engaged by the teeth of the ratchet-bar 10, whereby the two clamping members may be clamped and held'upon the jar or bottle, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A plate-spring 14, secured to member 1, has its forked end bearing against the ratchet-bar to retain the same in engagement with the plate 13.
15 denotes a screw-clamp which is pivoted at 16 to the clamping member 1 for the purpose of clamping the holder to atable or other suitable support, as seen in Fig. 1.
In the operation of the device the pivot-pin 9 is adjusted in the proper opening or aperture 8 of the link 7 in order to permit the jaws 3 to engage the desired size of jar or bottle. The latter is then placed between the jaws, as shown in Fig, 1, and the handles 6 brought together to clamp the jaws upon the jar. The clamping members will be locked in this position by the spring-actuated ratchetbar 10. The screw-clamp 15 is engaged with a table or other support to bind the holder upon the same.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A holder of the character described, comprising a pair of clamping members having handles at one end, a link pivotally connecting the opposite ends of said members, one of them being adjustable on the link, a screwclamp pivoted'to one of the clamping members, the latter having also a recess 11, a plate 12 covering said recess and provided at one side with the detent portion 13, a ratchet-bar pivoted to the other clamping member and my hand in presence of two subscribing Witextending through the recess 11 and under nesses. sai plate, anc a spring to norma y engage one of the teeth of the ratchet-bar with the KATE JOHNSON 5 detent portion 13 of plate 12, substantially as Witnesses:
described. J. S. MU'LLIGAN,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set LUCRETIA K. VVEYGANT.
