Be it known that I, ALEXANDER HARRISON BROWNLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Onehunga, Auckland,

. New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parcel Grips, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices such as are commonly known as grips and are intended and adapted for use in connection with parcels, satchels, or traveling-bags.

One object of my invention is to provide a grip that may be easily and quickly attached to an object such as before mentioned, either to supersede a priorly-attached grip or handle which may have become useless or disconnected from said object, or, as when used for parcels made up in a temporary form, to furnish a convenient means for holding said parcels, especially while they are beingcarried from place to place. Being separable from any object as easily as it is attachable thereto, the device may be used frequently and for any number of separate parcels.

Another object of my invention is to provide means for readily attaching to the grip a card or plate which may bear either the name and address of the owner, a suitable advertisement, or any other written, printed, or

embossed matter. By my invention such inscribed matter will he protected from erasure by being inclosed within the device.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View of the device when open. view of the device when closed. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device when opened; and Fig. 4: is a cross-section through the line a a, Fig. 2.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.

Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate, respectively, an outer member and an inner member,' which are pivoted one with the other by rivets 3 3, which pass transversely through arms 1 and 2, which, respectively, are formed-integrally of the members 1 and 2 and angularly thereof. The end of each arm 1 is twisted rectangularly of the Fig. 2 is a similar latterand curved to form a hook 1", and the end of each arm 2 is likewise twisted and curved to form a retaining-clasp 2", which when the grip is closed partially surrounds the hook 1". The members 1 and 2 may be formed of sheet metal, if preferred, and be nickel-plated or have their surfaces otherwise ornamented or prepared to protect them from oxidation. The cross-sectional form of the members 12 should be such that when the grip is closed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:, the handle 1 thus formed will be adapted for comfortable use. As shown in Figs. 3 and A, the outer surface of the member 1 and the inner surface of the member 2, respectively, are slightly curved tranversely for the purpose mentioned. The arms 1 and 2, respectively, are of such relative length inwardly of the rivets 3 as to permit the member 2 to pass inwardly of the member 1 when the grip is closed and also to allow space for the lugs 5 5, herein shown as six in numberand formed of recurved portions of the member 2. may be readily inserted beneath the lugs 5 and may bear the name and address of the owner, advertising matter, or any desired inscription. If desired, additional lugs 5 5 may be provided. These may be formed integrally of the member by partially separating them, as at two of their three sides, from said material and bending them outwardly of the member 2. The lugs 5 are so positioned that a card or plate of suitable dimensions properly positioned beneath the lugs 5 is prevented from moving endwise of the member 2. When 'the device is closed, as in use, the arms 1 and 2 frictionally engage each other sufliciently to prevent their separation by accident.

I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall Within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device of the class described, and comprising an inner member and an outer member, arms formed angularly of said members; pivots -coupling said arms, hooks formed on two of said arms; and clasps partially surrounding said hooks.

2. A device of the class described, and comprising an inner member and an outer member; arms formed angularly of said members; pivots coupling said arms, hooks formed on tWo of said arms; and clasps formed on tWo of said arms and partially surrounding said hooks.

3. A device of the class described, and comprising an inner member and an outer mem ber, arms formed angularly of said members; pivots coupling said arms, hooks formed on two of said arms; clasps partially surrounding said hooks; and lugs formed on the inner member and arranged to retain thereon a card or plate.

4. A device of the class described, and comprising an inner member, and an outer member; arms formed angularly of said members; pivots coupling said arms; clasps formed on two of said arms and partially surrounding said hooks; and lugs formed on the inner member and arranged to retain thereon a card or plate.
