I PATENT OFFICE.
CARL HOFFMANN, OF SOHWEIDNITZ, GERMANY.
cURTAlN-PRoTEC'l'ORa SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,709, dated December 22, 1903.
Application filed February 21. 1903. Serial No. 144,365. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LOARL HOFFMANN, asubject of the German Emperor, residing at Schweidnitz, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in what I term curtain-protectors, having for its object to prevent the curtain becoming torn or otherwise damaged.
Said invention consists of the combination and arrangements of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specif: ically pointed'out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a view at right angles therewith. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line of the spring securing or retaining device hereinafter described. Fig. 4 is a view showing my device in position upon a window.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to details, as they may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In carrying out my invention I preferably employ a plate or bracket f, adapted to be applied to either a door-frame or the crossrail of a window by suitable fastenings, said plate or bracket having a vertical or longitudinal socket therein to receive a slide or barb for the retention of said bar. Said bar hasa series of notches or cavities, one series being arranged in each side thereofto'permit of the engagement therewith and retention at the required point of adjustment of said bar, of a stud or catch Z, secured to the upper end of a spring h, the opposite end of said spring being secured in said bracket or plate, the outer end of said'stud or catch having a projecting portion accessible for its actuation by the finger of the operator in effectin'g the adjustment of said bar, as may be desired. To the upper end of the bar 1) is pivoted or hinged an arm a, adapted to be adjusted or moved within an arc of one hundred and eighty degrees, as required in the attachment or application-of the device or plate a roll 0 for engagement with the curtain, the 55, pivoted end of said arm having an arcuate stop or plate e, conforming tothe corresponding-surface of a boss formed upon the bar b, to limit the movement of said arm within the prescribed limits of adjustment, said stop engaging at either extremity the bar 17 laterally of said boss. By means of this arrangement it will be seen that the bar b, with its arm a and roll 0, is adapted to be applied either to the cross-rail of a window or to the vertical lateral portion of a door-frame, as may be required, said arm a being permitted to stand either in alinement with the bar I) or at right angles thereto and, as above noted,
to permit said roll, with its arm, to be swung to the right or to the left for the purpose heretofore stated. Generally it is only necessary to. move the arm a, with its roll, through an arc of ninety degrees instead of moving it as previously stated in efiecting the aforesaid adjustment thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' l. Adevice of the characterdescribed, com- 8o prisingasliding bar having pivoted or hinged to one end an arm carrying a bearing or roll and adapted to be moved in a suitable radius in applying the same for use, said arm having an arcuate stop for prescribing the movement of said arm.
2. A device of the character described, com prising a plate having a spring catch or stud, a sliding bar arranged in said plate or socket and adapted to be engaged by said spring 0 catch or stud, said bar having a pivoted or hinged arm at one end, provided with a roll or bearing, and adapted to bemoved in a suitable radius, in applying the same for use.
3. A device of the character described, com- 5 prising a bar having a series of notches or cavities in opposite sides thereof, a plate or socket. adapted to be attached to a suitable 1 boss upon said oar to prescribe the movement of said arm.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses. CARL HOFFMANN.
