Description

OTIS DEAN, RICHMOND, VlRG-lNIA, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT W. YOUNG;
OFA THE `SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 74,671, clzted February 1.8, 1868.
IMPRQVMENT in nnts'rtnos.
@Ligt tlgehu1e referat tu it tigen tettets tteut an mttttgtttt tf its smite.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: .a
Be it known that I, OTIS DEAN, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico, and State of Virginia., have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ink-stands;` and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference heing had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification. i Y
The objects of this invention are to prevent orA reduce evaporation, and` facilitate the dipping of the ink.
My invention relates to that class of inkstands in which a dipping-cup is so'attached to the cover that when the latter is closed, the cup will be immersed in the ink, and when it is opened will be drawn up'nnder the mouth ofthe inkstani in convenient position for dipping.
l My improvement consists in applying to the dipping-cop a rigid arm, which by contact beneath the top or the inkstand guides the cup into correct position under the month as the cover is raised, thus rendering the device more simple in construction and effective in operation, and avoiding the necessity of attaching the cup to the stationary tcp of the inkstand.
Figure l is a vertical section of'an nkstand as closed, illustrating my invention.
. Figure 2 is asimilar view ofthe same as'opened.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two igures.
A represents an inkstand or reservoir, and B the hinged lid thereof; C is a dipper or ladle, whichis connected to the under side of the lid B'by means ofthe rod D. The dipper is raised tothe mouth or opening G, when the lid is raised, and it contains a suicient'quantity for the occasion, facilitates dipping, and prevents evaporation from the main 'reservoir. The form of the inkstand is not material, that represented herein being merely a convenient type for illustration. The'dipper C is provided with an arm, D', projecting from that side ot it to which the elevating-rod D is attached. This mode of connection permits the dipper C to descend freely into the ink, and as it rises, the arm D', coming in contact with the under side of the top, E, rguides the dipper np into correct'position beneath theiapertnre in the top. .The rim of the ladle C may have a ange ground or otherwise adapted tot the under side of the top, E, and prevent evaporation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newf'and desire to secure by Letters `Patent, is-
The rigid arm D', attached to a. dipper, C, which is connec'tedwto the vlid by a rod, D, so as to operate in the manner and for the purpose set forth. f
OTIS DEAN.
