titte rlnmle nient in iu than tettena patent ma mating pnt nf tige time TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit known that I, J'. H. BROWN, of Hudson, in the county of St. Croix, State of Wisconsin, have invented a. new and improved Spring-Bed Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a. part of this specification, in which* l l Figure 1 is a top view of the improved bed-bottom applied to a bedstead.
Figure 2 isl e. section taken vertically through fig. 1 in the course of the line w af. Figure 3 is c. transverse section taken throughone of the spring-boxes in the vertical plane indicated by line y y in iig. 1. l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures. This invention relates to a novel improvement on that class' of spring-bedbottoms whereinfthe slats, which conf stitute the bottom, are suspended by means of India-rubber rings or/loops, so as to afford a free elastic motion. The'nature of my invention consists in suspending the slats composing a. bed-bottom from short pins, which lie in the same longitudinal lines. as the slats they respectively sustain, and in applying said pins to boxes which have open bottoms and removable tops, and. which arc secured to a bedsteadat its head and foot, so that any one of the loops can be removed without disturbing theothers, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled inthe art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
The drawings show my invention applied to-a common form of bedstead, A.. B B represent two horizontal transverse boxes extending from one side rail to theother ot' the bedstea-d, at the head and foot thereof, and firmly secured in their places. These boxes are both alike in construction and size, and consist respectively of twobars, a a, secured together so as to leave a space between them, and provided with a removable'top, b, which serves as a cover, and also as a means for keeping the snstaiuingpins c c in place in recess formed in'thc bars a a. The two bars a a of each box B maybe made of wood or of metal, andthe cap or cover t may be made of wood or metal. In the upper edges of these bars, and extending transversely across them, deep notches are made at proper distances apart, according to the number of slats, C, which it is desired to employ ina given width of bedstead, and in these notches short pins, c, are put, which will he covered and held down in place by the covers b, as shown inligs. 1, 2, and 3. The ends of 4all the slats are notched, so as to receive India-rubber loops,gg, whichvare hung from the pins c c, as shown. The studs or suspension-pins c c, being arranged in lines with the slats, it will be seen that the elastic loops y will hang from the pins'c, in such manner as to constitute elastic stirrups, in which the ends of the slats are supported, as shown in figs. 2 and 3. The covers b b of the boxes B B may be secured thereupon by means of screws or hoc-ks, so that these covers can be readily removed when it is desired to have access to the pins c and loops g.
It ,will be seen that each end of each Slat is sustained by means of an elasticloop suspended from a removable pin, c, which pin is supported at both ends, and held down in place by a. removable cover.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'.lhe construction of boxes B, of notched bars a a, and aremovahle cover, t, in'combination with separatelyremovable pins c, elastic suspension-loops g, and slats C, all arranged substantially as described.
J. H. BROWN.
