To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, BERNHARD HOLZ,J1'., a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New 5 Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to sad-irons of the type in which the handle is arranged to be detachable from the iron proper; and it has for its principal object to so construct the parts that while the handle may be readily detached when attached to the iron its hold on the same is reliable and substantial.

The invention will be found fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a View, partly in side elevation and partlyin section,ofasad-iron constructed after the principles of my invention, the parts being in their interlocked position. The iron proper, a, is formed with an elongated recess 1), which is somewhat widened at c and which at d is depressed and extends under the top surface of the iron proper, so thata bridge or overhang e is, in effect,forn1ed at both ends of the iron. The iron proper may be cast with this recess formed therein. In fitting the handle to the iron the lever in is raised, so as to contract the loop which wire fforrns and bring the'rebends m closer together. The lower part of the handle portion is then introduced into the recess 1) of the iron until both rebends come below the bridges e, whereupon the lever is released, so that the elasticity of the wire f causes the rebends to spread and take in under said bridges. By making the portions n of the rebends mconvergent the assembling of the parts is facilitated, as will be obvious. The parts being assembled, the handle cannot be detached except the lever is thrown up far enough so that When that isrdone, the handle may be elevated to the position shown in Fig. 2 and then removed.

-Ha.ving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a sad-iron, the combination of the iron proper, a handle member comprising a gripping portion and elastic attaching portions extending in substantially the same direction from the gripping portion, said attaching portions having relatively reverse projections adapted to be interlocked with the iron proper,

and a lever, pivotally connected to each of said attaching portions, for forcing said elastic portions out of interlocking engagement with the iron proper, substantially as described.
