To all whom it may concern Beitknown that I, BENJAMIN P. PoL- LOCK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to mops, and more particularly to that class havinga removably swab, removably grippedbetween a ing means, capable of being operated with little effort, on the part of the user, but so constructed and arranged as to take a powerful grip on the swab.

Another object is to provide a cheap, strong, durable and serviceable mop of light and substantial construction.

To such ends this invention consists in the several novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

The invention is clearly'illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to said drawing, 10, designates a handle or stick of the customary length and having a crosshead 11, rigidly secured thereto at one end. If desired, said cross head may have a reinforcement at its place of attachment to the handle, and as here shown, said reinforcement comprising a struck up piece of sheet metal 12, formed with openings through which the cross head passes, and an upturned ferrule 13, embracing the handle and secured thereto, The cross head may be strengthened by providing a longitudinal struck up rib or bead Specification of Letters Patent.

through each of which extends two arms 15, 16, the pair of arms 15, being connected at their lower ends by a crossbar 17, and'the arms 16, being similarly connected by a cross bar 18. The arms and their cross connections form two swab gripping jaws, 19, 20, between the cross bars of which may be placed a suitable swab, A, (see Fig. 2,) Near their lower ends the arms 15,16, are bent away from each other, as at 21, 22-, to form wedge-like parts that co5perate with the end walls of the slots 14, to clamp the jaws together when the arms have been moved up in the cross head, and below said outward bends they are bent back as at 23, 24, to bring the cross bars 17, 18, into contact with each other. The metal of the cross head around the slots may be struck up to form flanges and round oil the edges which engage with the arms 15, 16, threby minimizing friction when the arms are moved back and forth in the slots. The upper ends of said arms are pivotally connected to gether on lines parallel with the plane of the cross head and, as shown, said pivotal connection is formed by making circular bends 25, in the wire comprising the jaw 20, to provide eyes, and by forming right angles bends26, on the ends of the wire comprising the jaw 19, and hooking said bent ends 26, in the eyes 25. The wire of one of the jaws (here shown as the jaw 20) is continued upward toward the handle 10, as at 27, and the ends thereof are hooked into eyes 28, of a lever 29, pivoted to the handle at 30. Thelever has a handle 31, by which it is operated, and two legs 32, straddling the handle or stick 10, and formed with the eyes, 28, and holes for the pivot pin 30. When the lever 29, is swung up to clamp the jaws together, its handle 31, strikes against the stick and the point of connection between the members 27, and lever passes the pivot pin 31, thereby locking the parts in I not therefore desire to limit myself to the exact form of construction shown and de scribed.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a mop of the class described, the combination of a handle or stick, across head secured to one extremity thereof, and having a slot near each of its ends, and a pair of lever operated jaws, each jaw having a cross bar located wholly below the cross head, and a pair of arms extending through said slots, one through each slot, and pivoted to the opposite arms of the other jaw at a point above the cross head, said cross bars forming gripping means adapted to grasp a swab directly therebetween.

2. In a mop of the class described, the combination of a handle or stick, a cross head secured to one extremity thereof, and having a transversely extending slot near each of its ends, and a pair of lever operated swab gripping jaws, each jaw comprising a cross bar located wholly below the cross head and an arm at each end of the cross bar, the arms extending through corresponding slots in the cross head, and the arms of one jaw being pivotally connected to the opposite arms of the other jaw at a point above the cross head, the lower ends of said arms having lateral bends for engaging the end walls of the slots.

In a. mop of the class described, the combination of a handle or stick, a cross head secured to one extremity thereof andhaving a transversely extending slot near each of its ends, and a pair of swab gripping jaws, each jaw comprising a cross bar located below the cross head, and two arms, each extending through a corresponding slot in the cross head and pivotally con-' by side, each having a cross bar located below the cross head and apair of arms projecting through said slots, the upper ends of one pair of arms being pivotally "connected directly to the other pair, and

each arm having an outwardbend near its lower end, adapted to engage the end walls of the slots, the arms ofone jaw having extensions continued beyond'its pivoted connection with the arms of the other jaw,and a jaw operating lever pivoted to the handle or stick, and pivotally connected to said extensions of they arms.
