Description

I @ni-1th faire at-ntQfftz.
Leners Patent No. 74,688, `@zaten February 18, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
To ALI. WHoM IT MAY coNcEHN:
Be it known that-we, JAMES VAUGHN and JOHN MCGEE, of Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess, and State of. Illinois, have 'invented' new and useful Improvements in Double-Actinglumps; and'we do hereby declare that theollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will en able those skilled in the art to make and use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof `this specification.`
The present invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the various'parts composing the p ump, whereby great eiectiveness and many advantages are secured, as will be obvious from the following detail'description, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an outside view of the pump.l A A i i YFigure 2, a transverse section in thel plane ofthe line :l: a', fig. 1.
Figure 3, a section taken in the plane of the line y y, fig. 1.`.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, l
A A, in the drawings, represent the two cylinders of the pump, both of which are hung by trunnion-pins B, the one to one end of a beam, C, and the other to the opposite end of' the same, in each case it lbe'ingsuspended between two arins D thereof. This beam C `is hung at its cent-re, so as to have a. rocking motion, as through any suitable arrangement or connection of parts it is operated.` In each cylinder A, at or about half way between the two ends, which are left open, valves E are fixed for operatiom To each cylinder twopistons F are provided, one for ach'section. G, the rods to pistons F, which rods are made hollow, and at one end are open, while at the other end,or thatrend having the head, they are provided with valves H. -Theseipistons by their rods are to be fixed or stationary, so that the cylinders will move over or up and down upon them, and thus draw and suck the water up alternately through one piston-rod, while through anotherv of the opposite cylinders it is discharging, and so on ast-be pump is Worked. i
We claim :is new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent-.-
The arrangement of the movable cylinders A, pivoted 4at B in the yokes D at each end of the horizontal rocking-beaux YC, and fitting over the pistons G, immovably fixed in the framing at each end of the cylinders, all constructed asdescrbed, whereby the cylinders `are operated by the rocking-beam C, and kept in vertical line upon said pistons by the pins B in theiyoke D, as herein set forth fur the purpose specified.
