Description

ggnitrh ttttrs gefreut @fitta claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lis
HENRI? o. LOTHROP, oF MILFORD,MASSACHUSETTS'.
Leners Parent No. 77,989, dated May 19, 1868.
4IlldPROVEllilEhlTIN STIJItlll-LFIBIGINES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, HENRY O. LOTHROII, of Milford, in the county of Worcester, andState of Massachu setts, have invented certain new arid useful Improvements in Steam-Engines; and do hereby declare the following to be a full,`elear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and in which- Figure' is a. top view, and V Figure 8 is a vertical'section of that part of esteem-engine to which my present improvementsare applied. l The arrangement of the cylinder and valve-apparatus of the engine represented in the drawings, is substantially that for which I have recently applied'for and obtained Letters Patent of the United States, and need not'therefore'be described. 'c
My present invention has relation to the specialmode of connecting the three cylinder-pistons to the driving-V shaft of the engine, the object of this arrangement being to simplify the construction andvto lessen the cost of` r` the engine. That this object is fully accomplished, will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.
Asshown in the said figs. 7 and 8, the two endl pistons A A3 are bolted`sccurely together, and connected to the cranks a4 a* of the driving-shaft A2, by two connecting-rods b4 b4.
Thepiston-rod c4 ofthe central piston B2 slides freely through the piston A3, and isA connected to a head,
d4, slidingrin guides or ways e4 e, disposed centrally between the connecting-rods bbr. This head dbeing connected'with the central cranksf4 of the driving-shaft by a connecting-rod, g4, this latter crank f4 being in a., plane directly opposite to the cranks afa, before mentioned. t
It will be seen, without further explanation, that this arrangement ofthe pistons and above-described mechanism, by which they are connected with the driving-shaft, dispenses with many ofthe parts heretofore employed, and thus reduces the cost and simplifies the construction of the engine, which at the 'same time is still maintained in condition to operate with results equally good Vas those described in the patents hereinbefore referred to. i
-Having described my inrention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, what I The arrangement, with the rods b* connecting the pistons Al A3 with their crank or driring-shaft, of therods c4 g4, and sliding cross-head e, connecting the piston B2 with said shaft, substantially as herein shown and described. v
HENRY O. L OTHROP.
