SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,909, dated December 1 0 Application filed April 29, 1 903.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. RoBIsoHUNG, a citizen of the United S tates, residing at Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo county, Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional elevation, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on about the lines 3 3 of Figs. 1 and 2.
This invention relates to stoves, and, although not limited to such use, is particularly designed for stoves which burn bituminous coal.
One object of this invention is to provide a coking or roasting chamber of simple and convenient construction, so that the coal can be coked and the volatile gases thus driven therefrom before the coal is delivered to the fire-pot; and a further object is to provide simple and eflicient means for preventing the escape of gases while the magazine-cover is removed, as during the time that the magazine is being filled.
To these ends and also to improve generally upon devices of the character indicated the invention consists in the various matters hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the stove casing or barrel, and 2 is the fire-pot therein. The stove-casing is provided upon one side, above the fire-pot, with an opening 3, which communicates with a magazine 4:, suitably secured at the side of the casing 1, the top plate of the magazine being provided with an inletopening 5, through which the magazine can be filled, acover 6 normally closing this open ing, as will be readily understood.
The magazine is preferably provided with a downwardly and inwardly inclined false bottom 7, which is perforated, for a purpose to be hereinafter explained, and the space between this false bottom and the bottom proper of the magazine communicates with the interior of the casing 1. A grating 8, pivotally supported at its upper end, normally Serial No. 154,803. (No model.)
hangs substantially vertically by reason of gravity and serves to obstruct the portion of the opening 3 which is above the before-mentioned false bottom 7, so that fuel supported in the magazine rests against the said grating and is thus prevented from falling into the fire-pot. The rod 9, to which the grating is secured, projects beyond one side of the stove and is provided with an operating-handle 10. An imperforate plate or door 11 upon the inner side of the before-mentioned grating is pivotally supported at its upper end, so that it can swing downwardly and Wholly close the opening 3, said plate being carried by a rod 12, which extends beyond one side of the stove and is provided with an operating-handle 13. The casing l is provided in its upper portion above the opening 3 with any suitable eXit-fiue 14;.
The grating 8 being in the obstructing position (shown by full lines in Fig. 2) and the plate 11 being raised, as shown by dotted lines in said figure, in order to uncover the opening 3, fuel supported in the magazine upon the false bottom 7 is prevented from falling into the fire-pot by means of the grating 8, and a portion of the heated air rising from the fire in the fire-pot passes under the false bottom of the magazine, through the fuel in said magazine, and then through the grating back to the casing 1, whereby the volatile gases are driven off from the fuel in the magazine and escape through the exit-flue 14. The fuel in the magazine thus becomes roasted' or coked, and when it is desired to feed a portion of this fuel to the fire-pot it is only necessary to swing the grating inwardly, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. When it is desired to recharge the magazine, the plate or door 11 is brought into closing position, (shown by full lines in Fig. 2,) so that communication between the magazine and the interior of the casing 1 or stove proper is cut off. Gases rising from the fire-pot cannot, therefore, enter the magazine, but must find an exit through the line 14, so that when the plate or door 11 is closed the cover 6 of the magazine can be lifted and the magazine filled without danger of gases escaping from the stove.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A stove comprising a main casing provided with a fire-pot and having an opening in its side, a magazine at the side of said main casing, said opening leading to said magazine, and a movable grating obstructing said opening and tending to move toward obstructing position; substantially as descibed.
2. A stove comprising a main casing provided with a fire-pot and having an opening in its side,a magazine at the side of said casing and having its walls Wholly outside of said casing,said opening leading to said magazine,and'
a reticulated false bottom in said magazine, the space below said false bottom communicating with the interior of said casing,whereby heated air from said casing can enter said space and thenpass through the openings in said false bottom and through fuel supported upon said false bottom; substantially as described.
3. In a stove, a casing provided with a firepot, a magazine having a supply-opening, an opening communicating between said magazine and said casing, a grating obstructing said opening, and a movable imperforate plate adapted to close said opening both said grating and plate being pivoted at their upper ends; substantially as described.
4:. In a stove, a casing provided with a firepot and having an opening inits side, a magazine at the side of said casing, said opening leading to said magazine, a pivotally-supportedgrating obstructing said opening, and a pivoted plate upon the inner side of said grating and adapted to close said opening; substantially as described.
