UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
, THOMAS D. WOOIJSON, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY O. WOOLSON, OF SAME PLACE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. WOOLSON, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, in I the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Magazine-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in attachmentsto that class of stoves in which the fuel is burned at the base ofa column which is supported in a magazine over the fire-pot.
In stoves of this class it happens occasionally that the fire goes out from want of attendance, or from other causes, while the magazine I 5 is filled with coal. When this occurs it becomes necessary to empty the magazine before a fire can be kindled in the fire-pot.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple means whereby the coal may be retained in the magazine, and prevented from descendinto the fire-pot and ash-pit when the grate is (lumped; and it consists in a sliding plate or cover provided with means whereby it can be supported on the fire-pot under the magazine when it becomes necessary to empty the firepot, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents afragmentary vertical section of a stove provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, of my improved device. Fig. 4 is a cross-section in line a m, Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A is the magazine, B the fire-pot, and O the grate, of an ordinary ma gazine-stove.
My improved device for closing the base of s the magazine consists of a circular plate or cover, d, which, when in place, extends across 0 the open lower end or base of the magazine, and a rod or bar, E, which extends across the fire-pot of thestove and rests with its ends upon the upper edge, 1), thereof, and which supports theplate d. The latter is preferably made of cast-iron and provided with a handle, f. The

plate cl is also provided on its under side with projecting lugs or ears 9, by means of which the bar E is attached to the plate (I, so that the latter can slide freely on the bar E. The bar E is provided with a handle, 0, at its outer end, and preferably made square in cross-section to prevent the plate at from turning on the rod.
When itis desired to empty the fire pot while the magazine contains coal the rod E is inserted or forced through the column of coal at the base of the magazine until its inner end rests upon the edge I) of the fire-pot and its outer end upon the opposite or front edge of the fire-pot. The plate 01 is then forced along the upper side of the rod E until it closes the base of the magazine, where it remains. The grate is then dumped and the fire-pot cleaned out. When this has been accomplished and a fresh fire has been kindled the plate dis grad- 6 ually withdrawn, allowing the coal in the magazine to descend gradually upon the fresh fire until the fire-pot is again filled. By this means the necessity of emptying the magazine when the fire has died out and the troubleand annoy- 7o ance resulting therefrom are entirely avoided. The plate d also furnishes a means for retardingthe combustion in warm weather, when the 'oiidinary dampers are insufficient to reduce the temperature to thedesired point, as it prevents ignition of the coal at the base of the magazine.
My improved device is applicable to all sort s of magazine-stoves, and can be applied thereto, when required for use, instantaneously.
I claim as my invention- A device for closing the base of the magazine of a base-burning stove, consisting of a supporting-bar, E, and a plate, 0?, sliding on the bar E and adapted to close the low er end of the magazine, substantially as set forth.
' THOMAS D. WOOLSON.
