TO ALL WIIOM IT'B'IYYCNGERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. EMERSON, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer, and' State of New Jersey,
halve invented certain new. and useful Improvements inl Planng-Teet'l1; endl do hereby declare'the following l t be a full, clean-and exact description of the same, refer'ence lbeing had to the accompanyingdrawings, making a part of this specification, in vvheh l l Figure 1 represents a, view-of :the planing-tooth from-fone of its sides., u Figure 2 represents a View from the opposite side thereof. I Figures 3, 4, 5, and 6 representl edge ve\'\"`s,'a .nd Figures 7. and Sirepresent sectiolfsthroughtheplaninglt'eeth in question. i lSiinnilar letters oireference, where they occurin the several'separatey figures, denote like parts ofthe tooth in all of' the drawings. v i i My invention consists in-.ilormng the cutting-toother'point, the recessed.plan-er,I and the guide or ,rauge inv one instrument,`
l To enable others skilled in the art tornake nnduse-my invention, I will proceed to describe the stime with `reference to thedrawings'.
The planing-teeth A are. cutor stamped out of V'sheet steel, by suitable dies', and are in onepiece. .The
teeth may be secured to the' plate intheinanner set forth in patents heretofore granted tome for securing teeth infsaws. The planing-cutters may-be rights'or lefts, or both rights'and lefts, on the Sonie plate, so as to plane `on either or both offit's'sides.' The cutting-point a of theftootlr is set in the usual form of a. saw-tooth.` The recessed planing-edge or cutter, b, is formed by'stamping a recess inl the toot l1, from one sideiof it, and causing it to project from the face of the t oo'th,on the other side'. This planing-edge b should project slightly beyond. the extreme cutting-point, a, of the toothfso that thevpl'anngcutter n xay talie olf ashaving beyond where the point a cuts. Beloxv'the'vrecessecl planing-cutter b there isla rounded portion; c, inrear of the eiitting-edge12.-
This is so made to preventa shoving frein being takeuo by that'portiom'which, if permitted, would choke the planer,-as` there wouldbe noclearance for'theshaviug Behind the planing-edge 6 there is athro'at, d, l'for the shavings taken oi by itto pass through, lwhilst theprjecting portion, f, pn' the sames'ide, Yand in rear ofl said cutting-edge, prev-entsfthe edge fro'ur running orbiting into the wood, as-its tendency is'tovriun thatfwny.
The recessed `portion may be swagell out, after the teeth are punched, or the whole maybe dope at one heat or loperation.' The Wall ye, between the recess d and the thi-caty, is not lush with the body of the tooth, o r of its cuttingfedges, on the reeessedside thereoi, bnt `slightlybelow them. On the other side, however, it foruxsa cohtinuationof the sur-face-down to the throatg, and serving as a gaugeor guide, as above stated, to prevent the cutting-edge '6' from running into the Wood.
r Having thus fully described my invention, what vI- claim is Y A planing-tooth, in which the cutting-point, the recessed planing-cutter, and the gaugeor guide to prevent the cutters `from running into the Wood, are all formed-in or on one and the saure piece of steel, substantially i `as and for the purpose described..V v
