,To ALL W-HoM IT MAY GONGERN:
Beit known that I, DANIEL CROWLEY, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and Statero'f Pennsylvania, have'invented an Improved Cleaner for Rolls in Machinery for Working' Cotton; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the 'accompanying drawings, making part of thisspecitication. v i
A single rank of rollers, with 'the cleaners applied thereto, would suciently show my invention, but I have represented a full set of the rollers in the drawings- Figure 1 being a front elevation of a set of rollers, provided with my improved cleaner.
Figure 2 an end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 aninside view of one of the cleaners.
Like letters designate corresponding 'partsfin all the figures.
'Let A A represent the rollers, the upper set cylindrical or smooth, .the 'lower set iiuted, between which, the roving or yarn passes. It isnecessary to keepthese rollers clearV of dirt, and to prevent the lapping of cotton libres around them, which otherwise would'soon clog them, so as to render them useless, or entirely stop their'rotation. It is also desirable to cause these rollers to detach all motes and impurities from the rovi-ng or yarn, and thereby improve its quality; and to e'ect this the rollers must be cleaned as fast as they become foul.' The upper or smooth rollers are sometimes.varnshed,'and sometimes covered with leather, to cause the impurities to adhereto them, and become detached from the roving or yarn. Hence the necessity of a thorough cleaner to effect this purpose. i
Heretofore cloth cleaners have been used, being keptin light contact with the rollers, But cloth only very imperfectly answers the purposes: first, because. it cannot well adapt'itsfclf to the vsurface ofthe rollers, so as to wipe all partsV thereof; second, because its'texture is not 'suitable to brush on' and retain the impurities; third, because it becomes glazed over frequently; fourth, because it Vrequires frequent cleaning-four times a day; fifth, because it fails to prevent the lapping of fibres; sixth, because it produces undue friction on the rollers; seventh, because it is costly, and wears ont rapidly; and, finally, because it eli'ects the purpose in a i very imperfect manner. But, notwithstanding these imperfections, no good substitute has been found before l that which is'the subject of the present invention. i
I employ sheep-pelts, that is, sheep-skins, tanned or tawed with the wool on, and applied withA the ends of the wool pressing against the rollers. The cleaners B B are made of pieces of this pclt, of sufficient size to properly cover the sets.of rollers, and arc attachedto backs or boards, substantially as shown in the drawings, so as to be held in proper position, and pressed with the proper degree of Aforce against the'rollers, ,the pressure being adjustable if desired. The cleaners are readily removable for the purpose of freeing' them of the collected impurities.- i
The peculiar advantages of cleaners made of this material, are, adaptability to the surface of the rollers, reaching well around them, and cleaning all parts thereof great elasticity, exceeding durability, capacity to collect and retain the impurities for a comparatively long time, and efficiency in cleaning the rollers. Itis also free from the objections to the cloth cleaners, as above setrforth, and costs much less. Yarn passed through rollers with these improved cleaners is worth fteen per cent. more than with -cloth cleaners,.becanse being better freed fromdirt and impurities.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i The combination of cleaners B'B, constructed as described, with the rollers AA, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified. Y
v DANIEL CROWLEY.
