Description
(No Model.) A A J. THOMSON, Jr. ROTARY 'GLEARER FOR DRAWING ROLLS 0F GO'ITON MACHINERY.
No. 593,972. Patented Novn 16, 1897.`
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES THOMSON, JR., OF PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE THOMSON MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ROTARY CLEARER FOR DRAWING-ROLLS F COTTON- MACHINERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,972, dated November 16, 1897.
Application ined April 2o, 1897.
To all whom t may oon/Gern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES THOMSON, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Clearers for the Drawing-Rolls of Cotton Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
In the employment of rotary clearing-disks which bear iiatly upon the rolls the action of the rolls tends to cause a movement of the collected waste upon the face of the disk from the point of primary accumulation toward the central portion of the disk; and it is the object of my invention to provide a clearing-disk having a face upon which the collected waste will tend to remain in posi'- tion; and it consists in providing the disk with a convex or protuberant face whereby an outwardly-enlarging space will be provided between the face of the disk and the plane of the adjacent surfaces of the rolls, tending to prevent the inward movement of the waste upon the face of the disk.
'In the accompanying drawings, Figure l` represents a front view of the drawing-rolls,
- an edge view of the clearing-disk, and a longitudinal section of the cover for the rolls. Fig. 2 represents a section taken in the line 2 2 of Fig'. 1. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged edge view of the clearing-disk.
In the drawings, A represents the leathercovered top rolls, having their upper surfaces arranged in the same horizontal planes, B the lower iiuted rolls, and C the cover for the rolls, the said cover being pivoted to the frame of the machine by means of the ears a a. The clearing-disk D is provided with a convex or conically-protuberant surface e and with a turning-axis E, preferably screwed into the disk, so as to be removable therefrom, and' provided with a head b, which rests against the'top of the cover whenever the said cover is vraised from the rolls, the said turning axis serai No. 633,043. (No model.)
E being loosely held in the bearing-perforation c in the top of the cover and in the bearing-perforation cl in the bracket F, the bearing-perforation d being so set relatively to the bearing-perforation c that the turning axis E will be thrown slightly out of a vertical position and the face e of the disk be caused to bearV at one side of its axis uponl one or more of the rolls, the opposite side of the face of the disk beinginclined upward in all of its radial directions from the plane of the upper surface of the rolls, thus providing for the accumulation of waste upon the outer portion of the face of the disk and tending to prevent the undesired accumulation of waste at the central portion. The surface e of the disk is formed of coarse cloth f, adapted to hold the collected waste, and the contact of the surface e or of the collected waste thereon at one side of the turning axis Ev with the ad# serve to cause the rotation of the disk; but
lthe disk, having a convex or protuberant face, may be rotated in a position over the rolls by other convenient means, if preferred-as, for instance, by the means shown in my Patent No. 579,095, dated March 16, 1897.
The combination of the drawing-rolls, with a clearing-disk having a convex or protuberant face, whereby, when the face of the disk at one side of itsturning axis is in contact with one or more of the top rolls, the face of the disk at the opposite side of its axis will be elevated from the rolls, and an outwardlyenlarging space will be provided between the faces of the disk and the plane of the upper surface of the rolls, for inducing 'the proper accumulation of waste upon the outerportion of the face of the disk.
JAMES THOMSON, JR.
