PATENT OFFICE.
A DAVID H. COX, JR, OE RAHWAY, NEYV JERSEY.
DARNlNG LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. ?40,400, dated October 6, 1903. Application filed February 10, 1903. Serial No. I42,693. T em To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID H. COX, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Rah- Way, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Darning-Last, of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to darning-lasts, and has for its objects to produce a device of this character which will be very simple of construction, admirably adapted for use as a darning-last, and which will serve the additional function of a packing and dispensing case for needles and the like.
The invention comprises the details of construction more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional View of one form of the device. Fig. 2 is an end view of the device, illustrating that end which forms the darning-surfacm Fig. 3 is a view of the clamping-ring.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the darning-las'r, which, as illustrated in Fig. 1, comprises a hollow body or receptacle composed of any suitable material and having comparatively thin walls, thus rendering the deviceproportionately light for shipment in quantities. .This body, which is annular in cross section, comprises side walls 2 and rounded ends t and 5. The end 4 has formed therethrough an aperture 6, through which articles, such as needles or the like, may be introduced into the interior of the receptacle, this orifice being normally closed by a removable stopper 7. Adjacent to the aperture 6 is formed an interior annular flange 6, which serves as a stopper-seat and additionally to preventQthe contents of the case from jarring forcibly against the'stopper, so as to cause the latter to be removed by such jarring. The end of the device is smooth and is rounded to form a suit-able darning-surface.
the device to then be employed as a darninglast.
10 is a clamping-rim g which is supplied with the device for the purpose oficlamping the material thereto when usedfor darning purposes. v
From the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a device which is admirably adapt ed to serve the twofold function of a packing and dispensing case for small articles and to be employed by the purchaser as a darninglast. The utility of the constricted opening of the device has been already set forth, and it will be noticed that the advantage of this constricted opening is not restricted to cases where the darning-last constituting my invention is used as a receptacle for needles, but" that it equally applies, no matter what may be the nature of the article-for which the body of the device is used, as a container from which the contents may conveniently be dispensed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As an article of manufacture, a hollow, elongated cylindrical body, rounded at one end to form a darning-last and constricted at its opposite end to form an aperture annularly flanged to form a stopper-seat.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. 1
