THE NORRIS PiTERS CO. PHUTO-LITHQ, WASNWGTON, D \i.
UNITED STATES Patented August 25, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR NECKTIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,436, dated August 25, 1903.
Application filed May 11, 1903. Serial No. 156,678. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLAN B. MERRITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Neckties, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved fastening device for neckties; and it consists of an adjustable band adapted to fit closely within the folds of a collar and to hold a necktie securely in place.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of a collar, showing the points of attachment whereby the tie is held in place, the necktie being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastening-band. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the necktie provided with rings adapted to engage with hooks upon the ends of the fastening-band. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hooks employed in my invention.
I employ the double hook 1, made from a single piece of wire bent to form the horizontal hook 2 and vertical hook 3 and being twisted to form the loops 4, within which the band 5 is fastened by twisting alone, no stitching or other fastening devices being necessary. The function of the hook 3 is to fasten the attachment under the lower edge of the inner fold of the collar at the point indicated in Fig. 1 by the numeral 6. The hook 7 is opadjustably upon the main body of said band. The necktie 10 is provided with rings 11 upon its rear surface, such rings 11 being loosely held to the tie 10 by means of stitches 12.
In use the looped wire 9 is adjusted until the band 5 is of the necessary length to properly fit about the collar, the hook 3 being placed in position at the point indicated by the numeral 6, and the hooks 2 and 7 are then engaged with the rings 11, thus holding the tie securely in place in front of and toward the lower edge of the collar of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class described, comprising a band 5, hooks 1 and 7, the material forming the hook 1 being twisted to form the loops 4 wherein the end of the said band 5 is held, the hook 7 provided with aloop 8 through which said band 5 is passed, an adjusting device 9 provided with loops through which the said band 5 is passed and held in its adjusted position,- substantially as specified.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a band, a fastening device provided with a plurality of loops wherein the band is held, hooks 2 and 3 formed on said fastening device, a fastening device secured to the other end of the band and provided with a hook 7, an adjusting device provided with a plurality of loops retaining said band in its adjusted position, the said hooks 2 and 7 passing through eyes 12 secured to a tie, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALLAN B. MERRITT.
