Be it known that LEUGENE T. SPECH'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,

in the county of (look and State of Illinois,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oast-Oifs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and improved clip designed, primarily, to be used as a castofi": or connection betweenthe main strap and tabs of suspenders or similar articles, and is designed to produce a device of the class described that shall be extremely simple in its construction and which instead of yielding under any stress that normally tends to open the connection shall be made tighter thereby.

Referring to the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a suspender-end, showing my improvement. as applied between the tab and the main Fig. 4 1s a similar view show ng a slightlymodified construction. d is the tab, which may be of any desired construction and has the tab connection e at ture of my invention, is made of some resiliwhich are connected by the loop or angle j, which is so shaped as to prevent the upper cross-piece of the tab connection e from rising therein and which also has the angle forming the lower portion thereof sufficiently acute so that if the tab connection be pulled down while the clip is held up the upper cross-bar of the tab connection will tend to separate the two portions 9 and IL. The front portion 9 has formed at its upper ends the hooks or jaws 7a, which are separated by the recess Z, through which an oppositelyfacing hook or jaw m on the rear portion passes, the relation of these jaws being such that when the front and rear portions are separated, as by the previously-explained action of the tab connection resulting from a downward pull, the jaws. will; be brought more firmly together, thuspreventing the lower portion of the main-strap connection, which they embrace, frombeing freed therefrom. By the construction shown and described it .will be apparent that the greater the longitudinal strain between the strap and the tab the tighter the cast-off clip will hold the two connections. At the same time when it is desired to use the clip as a cast-0E all that is necessary is to press the-front and rear portions thereof together until they assume the position indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 8

and 4, in which the main-strap connection can be readily detached.

It will also be perceived that this form has the additional advantage of holding the mainstrap connection somewhat more securely than does the first-described form.

In Figs. 6 and 9 I have illustrated another form of my invention, in which the clip is made of spring-wire. As before, (L is the the form previously described. The hooks or jaws 7c are separated by a loop Z, and I conveniently terminate the ends of the wire in the horizontal portion of this loop, where they are held together by a small cylindrical tube Z The jaw m on the rear portion passes through the loop Z, and the two jaws thus formed cooperate with the lower portion of the main-strap connection in the manner previously described.

It will be apparent that these cast-off clips can be used either side up-that is, with the jaws cooperating with the main strap connection, as shown in Figs. 1 to 7, or with the tab connection, as shown in Figs. 8 and 9-the principle and method of operation remaining the same in both positions in which the castoif clip may be placed.

It will be apparent that the cast-off clip herein described may be constructed of any material having the necessary resiliency and strength and that it may be covered with leather, celluloid, or any other material that may be desired to give it smoothness or finish.- It is a single integral piece, as distinguished from one where two or more parts are employed and jointed together to have the necessary relative movement.

While I have shown my invention as embodied in the form which I at present consider best adapted to carry out its purpose, it will be understood that it is capable of modifications and that -I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art.

WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. In a device of the class described, the combination with the main-strap connection and the tab connection, of a resilient integral cast-off clip between them having a loop embracing one connection and a pair of jaws the other, said connections and cast-0E being so shaped that any pull on the connections tends to cause the jaws to hold the connection which they embrace more firmly.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with the main-strap connection and the tab connection, of a resilient integral cast-off clip between them having an angular loop embracing one connection and a pair of crossed jaws embracing the other connection, the operation of a pull between the connections being to cause the connection in the loop to expand the clip to bring the jaws more firmly together upon the other connection.

In a device of the class described, the combination with the main-strap connection and the tab connection, of a resilient integral cast-0E clip between them having the loopj embracing the uppercross piece of the tab connection and having the jaws k separated by the recess Z through which the jawm passes, the said jaws embracing the lower cross-piece of the main-strap connection; substantially as described.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with the main-strap connection and the tab connection, of a resilient integral cast-01f clip between them having a loop embracing one connection and a pair of crossed jaws the other connection, one of said con-' nections being provided with the slot 0 into which the end of the jaw m is adapted to pass; substantially as and for the purpose described.
