PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM G. TURNER, OF FRENCH CAMP, CALIFORNIA.
GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 736,893, dated August 18, 1903. Application filed February 12, 1902. Serial. No. 93,660. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, WILLIAM G. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at French Camp, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Garments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shirts, and contemplates the provision of a' shirt which, while similar in exterior appearance to an ordinary shirt, is calculated to effectually prevent dust and dirt from reaching the'person of a wearer through the sleeves and the neck-opening.
With the foregoing in mind the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front view of my improved shirt with parts broken away, and Fig. 2 a detail section taken in the plane indicated by the broken line 2 2 of Fig.1.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings, referring to which A is the body, and B B the sleeves, of the shirt. The body is preferably similar to that of an ordinary shirt-2'. 6., has a neck-opening a and is buttoned from said opening down the front, as indicated by 7b. The sleeves are also, by preference, of the construction common to ordinary shirts.
O O are auxiliary sleeves, of textile or other suitable material, arranged within the shirtsleeves B and extending from the wristbands to points about onethird up the sleeves, where they are securely sewed to the same. The said auxiliarysleeves have buttoned wristbands c and are designed in practice to prevent dust, dirt, &c., from reaching the person of the wearer through the sleeves B. They are preferably formed of a single thickness of material except at their ends, this in order to assure the shirt as a whole being light and cool.
D is a neck-shield, of textile or other ma terial, arranged within the upper portion of the bodyA and designed to prevent any dust or dirt that may find its way through the neck-opening a from reaching the undershirt or the body of the wearer. Said shield has a neck-opening d coincident with that of the body A and is by preference buttoned fromsaid opening d down the front, as indicated by e. It is sewed along its outer edge to the front, shoulders, and back of the body A; but its inner portion-t. 8., the portion surrounding the neck-opening d-is loose from the body, this latter to enable it to snugly receive the neck of the wearer at a point below the neck-opening d of the body and effectually serve the function ascribed to it.
I am well aware that the combination, with a shirt provided with a collar, a front opening, and means for closing its front, of a neckband attached to the shirt within the collar and adapted to be turned inward and downward when not desired for use or to be turned upward when it is desired to attach a linen collar to it is old. I therefore make no claim to such combination.
What I claim is-- a The herein-described shirt consisting essentially of the body provided with a collar and means for olosin g the same, and the shield arranged within the upper portion of the body, entirely below and separate from the collar thereof; said shield being attached along its outer edge to the front, shoulders and back of the body, and having a neck-opening disposed below the collar of the body, and also having the portion between its collar and the front, shoulders and back of the body loose from the body, as and for the purpose set forth.
. In testimony whereof I affix my signature
