PATENT OFFICE.
RAZOR-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,859, dated August 18, 1903. Application filed June 10, 1902. Renewed May 25, 1903. Serial No. 158,760. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. MEEHAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Guards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in razor guards or shields,my object being to provide a device of this class which shallbe simple in construction, economical in cost, reliable, durable, and efficient in use; and to these ends the invention consists of the features hereinafter described and claimed, all ofwhich will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows my improved device applied to a razor. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line so as, Fig. 1. Fig. at is a side view of the device shown in detail and on a larger scale. Fig. 5 is an underneath view of the same.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a guard-plate adapted to occupy a position adjacent the edge of the-razor-blade 6. This plate is provided with a series of separated teeth 5 which project beyond the edge of the razor and prevent the edge from cutting the face of the user. These teeth 5 are bent over away from the edge of the razor, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Each extremity of the guard-plate is provided with a lug 5, having a threaded opening to receive an adjusting-screw 7, which is also threaded in lugs S formed on a plate 8, which engages the back or thick edge of the razor opposite the cutting edge. As shown in the drawings, the screw 7 is provided with right and left threads, which engage the openings of the lugs 8 and 5, respectively,
I to facilitate the movement of the guard-plate when the adjusting-screws are turned. The central portion of the back plate 8 is provided with a clasp 9, which embraces the thick part of the razor on opposite sides and holds the device securely on the blade. As shown in the drawings, this clasp is detachably applied to the plate 8, which for this purpose is pro vided with a leaf-spring 8 which is an integral part of the plate, being punched out of it. The plate 8 is also provided with a short pin or stud 8, which slips into an opening formed in the clasp when the blade has been passed beneath the spring 8, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The razor-blade may be inserted in the clasp of the guard from either end, according as it is desired to use the razor in the right or left hand. When the guard is in place, the guard-plate may be adjusted at will. by turning the set-screws 7.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A razor-guard comprisinga guard-plate, a back plate, and adjusting-screws having right and left threads engaging the respective parts, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a razor-guard provided with a lug at each entremity having a threaded opening, a back plate having a lug at each extremity also provided with a threaded opening, and adjusting-screws having right and left threads engaging the threaded openings of the respective parts, substantially as described.
3. In a razor-guard, the combination of a guard-plate, a back plate, screws having right and leftthreads engaging the two plates, and a clasp detachably mounted on the back plate.
4. In a razor-guard, the combination of a guard-plate, aback plate having a leaf-spring and a stud, a clasp engaged by the said spring and having an opening to receive the stud of the backplate, and suitable means for connecting the two plates.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
