UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
KNlFE-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Application filed September 22, 1905. Serial No. 279,735-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. BARIEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Knife- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
ro My invention relates to a knife-sharpener;
I 5 plate is removable in order that it may be sharpened when the edge becomes worn from use.
construct the frame of the knife-sharpener as that it may be adjusted so as to tightly hold the hardened-metal plate after the same has been narrowed by being ground.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of 2 5 parts, which will be hereinafter more clearly set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved knife-sharpener in position for use and a knife in position in the sharpener shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the upper portion of the knife-sharpener. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3 Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
horizontal section taken on the line 5 5 of Tn the construction of my improved knifesharpener the frame is made in two mating parts, each comprising a base-plate 1, from which extend upwardly the posts 2, and formed integral with thefront faces of the upper portions of said posts are the for- 4 5 wardly-projecting ribs 3, and the inner adj acent faces 4 of these ribs are formed on lines diverging outwardly from a vertical line. The plates 1 are adapted to be'secured to a table or other suitable base by means of screws 5, one of which passes through a slot 6,
formed in one of the plates, thus providing "the means for adjusting this plate and its post to and from the opposite plate and post. Formed in the lower portions of the inner ad- 3 5 j acent faces of the post 2 are notches 7, and
formed integral with the rear sides of said A further object of my invention is to so Flg. 5 1s a posts are the lugs 8. A screw 9 passes through an aperture formed in one of these lugs and into a screw-threaded aperture in .the opposite lug, which screw is for the purpose of drawing the two posts together.
10 indicates a hardened-metal plate, preferably of steel, the side edges 11 of which are slightly beveled in such manner as that sharp edges are provided on the front side of said plate. This plate is located between the posts 2, its lower portion occupying the notches 7 and its upper portionextending upwardly between t e upper ends of said posts 2 between the inclined faces 4 thereon. A retaining-plate 12 extends across the front of the plate 10 just below the ribs 3 and is secured to said posts 2 by means of the screws 13. The screw that enters the post carried by the adjustable plate 1 passes through a slot 14, formed in the end of the plate 12, and thus provides for the adjustment of said plate 1 and its post.
My improved knife-sharpener is assembled by securing the fixed plate and post to a table by means of one of the screws 5 and also securing the retaining-plate 12 to said post by means of one of the screws 13. The sharpening-plate 10 is now arranged with one of its edges in the notch 7 of the fixed post, after which the adjustable plate and post is brought into position next the opposite side of said plate 10. The screw 9 is now inserted through the aperture in the lug 8 of the adjustable post, and as said screw is tightened the post is brought to bear against the lefthand edge of the plate 10. The remaining one of the screws 13 is now inserted through the slot 14 and tightened, so as to lock the plate 12 to the adjustable post, after which the remaining screw 5 is inserted through the slot 6 to secure the adjustable plate to the table.
A knife is sharpened with my improved device by inserting the blade between either edge of the plate 10 and the corresponding rib 3. Then said blade is moved so as to bear on the inclined face 4, and as said knife is loosening the various screws of the adjustable plate and post, so as to bring new sharpening edges into use, or said plate can be reversed or turned upside down, so as to bring new sharpening edges into use. When all of the sharpening edges of said plate have become dull, said plate can be removed and reground and again located between the posts and tightened thereinby manipulating the screws of the adjustable plate and post.
A knife-sharpener of my improved construction is simple, strong, and durable, can be arranged for use on a table or on a wall, is easily and quickly adjusted to the width of the sharpening-plate, and said plate can be very easily reversed or adjusted between the posts and plates.
I claim 1. In a knife-sharpener, a pair of posts, means whereby the posts are adjustably clamped together, and a sharpening-plate held between said posts; substantially as specified.
2. In a knife-sharpener, a pair of posts, a plate fixed to one of said posts and adjustably secured to the opposite post, and a sharp ening-plate clamped between said posts; substantially as specified.
3. In a knife-sharpener, a pair of posts in the inner faces of which are formed verticallydisposed notches, a plate fixed to one of the posts and adjustably secured to the opposite post, and a sharpening-plate arranged between the posts and located in the notches therein; substantially as specified.
4. In a knife-sharpener, a pair of posts, lugs integral with and projecting outwardly from said posts, a draw-screw passing throug one of said lugs and seated in the opposite lug, a plate fixed to one of the posts and adjustably secured to the opposite post, and a sharpening-plate clamped between the posts; substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
