Description
HIRAM WENTWORTH AND V. B.
CLARK, OF BIPON, WISCONSIN.
IM PROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 73,481, dated January 21, 1868.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HIRAM WnN'rwoR'rH and V. B. CLARK, of Ripon, in t-he county of Fond du Lac, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Securing and Fastening and Unfastening the Oil-Pot in Lanterns; and we do hereby declare that the followin g is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in providing a lantern-bottom, marked A in the drawings, with outlines showing the positions of the oilpot, spring, and bracket in the same; also, showing, in perspective, a projecting iiange, marked J, at the bottom of the lan tern, with the points of pressure on the spring F, marked L and K, above and below the iiange J, and the guard, marked E, attached to the outside of the lantern-bottom, protecting the spring.
rIhe second perspective View represents an oil-pot, marked B, showing the position of the ange, marked C also, the projection, marked D, at the top ot' the oil-pot, which rests when in place upon the end of the sprin g F, at H, and the elbow of the bracket Gr at the point marked M. rIhis projection D is an extension only of the top of the oil-pot B.
The third view of the spring, marked F, shows the arrangement of a hook, H, formed at the upper end of the spring; also, in the fourth perspective view, is shown the bracket, marked G, with the point or elbow, marked M.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation. We construct our lantern-bottom in any of the known forms, of tin, brass, copper, or oi' any other suitable metal or material.
The ange C is constructed by soldering a narrow strip, of the same material of which the oil-pot is made, near the bottom of the oilpot, in such a manner that the upper side of the flange will, when in use, rest against the bottom of the flan ge J on the lantern-bottom, thereby holding the oil-pot rmly in its place. The bracket G is also made of the same material, the two ends soldered fast to the lantern-bottom, so that the elbow or point M will project inward, and the lower end will gradually slant outward, and form a guide to the oil-pot, to the point M. The spring F may be constructed of brass or any other metal, with sufficient spring and strength to force the oil-pot B to its proper place. The guard E is made of the same material as the rest of the lantern-liottom and soldered over and near the lower end of the spring F on the side of the lantern-bottom.
To remove the oil-pot B from the lanternbottom, press the spring F at L or K. To adjust it for use, press it into the opening in the lantern-bottom.
We claim as our invention- 1. The spring F, as applied to lantern-bottoms.
2. The bracket G and manner oi' attaching it opposite to the spring F.
3. The arrangement of the spring F, so as to be operated both above and below the lian ge J, at L and K.
4. The guard E.
5. The iiange C on oilpot B. 4
6. The projection D at the top of the oilpot B.
7. The arrangement of the different parts, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
