RICHARD WHEATER, OF LADDSDALE, IO\VA.
FASTENING FOR PICKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,389, dated June 30, 1903. Application filed November 15, 1902. Serial No. 131,497. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD WHEAT R, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laddsdale, in the countyof Davis and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fastening for Picks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in picks, mattocks, or other tools of this class; and my object is to provide a tool wherein the body portion and socket are made in separate pieces, so that the same handle may be used with several different tools or that the tool may be renewed when worn out or broken.
Other objects and ad vantages will be hereinafter more clearly stated, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of myimproved device in its assembled position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with parts separated, and Fig. 3is a perspective view thereof ready to be assembled.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout, A represents the body portion proper of a pick, B the socket, and O the handle.
The body portion A is cut away upon its lower side to form the dovetailed reo'ess 1. The socket B is provided upon its upper end with a dovetailed head portion 2, which is adapted to enter the recess 1, formed in the,
body portion A. Formed integral with the face of the head 2 and extending upwardly therefrom is a lug or finger F, which is adapted to enter a recess 3, cut in the face of the body portion A, the said finger and recess being at one side of the center of the head and body portion. A similar finger Gr projects downwardly from the face of the recess 1 and is adapted to enter a recess 4, cut in the face of the socket B, the said flange and recess being on the opposite side of the center of the head and socket as that occupied by the finger F and recess 3.
When the parts have been assembled, they are held in place by a bolt, said bolt being threaded and adapted to pass through a bore 5 in the body portionA and engage a threaded portion of the bore 6 in the socket B, by which means the parts are held securely together.
When it is desired to place a new or difierent body portion A upon the socket B, the bolt H is removed and the parts separated, when a new tool may be placed thereon, it being understood that the body portion A is to be shoved onto the socket B from one side, the dovetailed flanges E and D of the body portion taking under the ledges E and D'of the socket B, and when the body A has been properly placed upon said socket B the fingers F and G will be located within the re cesses 3 and 4 and the bores 5 and 6 properly registered for the reception of the bolt H. It will now be seen that when the bolt H is inserted and turned home the parts will be firmly secured together, and by providing the lugs or fingers Fand Ganylateral movement of the parts is prevented.
By having the flangesE and D fitting snugly underneath the ledges E and D all strain upon the bolt H that might arise from using the tool as a pry and the handle as a lever or when a blow is struck is overcome. The flanges F andG also serve to arrest the strain upon said bolt. Should the parts become worn, so that the tool proper will not register centrally with the handle, the flanges F and G may be slightly bent one way or the other, so that the parts will again be'brought into registry when assembled.
By providing several difierent body portions it will be seen that should one of them break or become dull a new body may be quickly placed upon the handle and housed While the other one is being repaired, thus obviating any delay to the operator.
While I have described the preferred combination and construction of parts deemed necessaryin materializing my invention, I desire to comprehend such equivalents and substitutes as may be considered as fairly falling within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a tool, a body portion or tool proper having a recess with inwardly-inclined walls and ICO also having a finger G and a recess 3 on opname to this specification in the presence of posite ends of said recess, in combination Lwo subscribing witnesses.
with a handle-socket having a head to fit said I recess and also having a recess 4 to receive RICHARD WHEATER' 5 said finger G and a finger F to fit in recess 3 WVitnesses:
as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my THOMAS MCCARTY, ARTHUR SEAMAN.
