BURIAL-CASE.
Application filed December 12, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK D. SKAI-IEN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented -a certain new and useful Burial-Case, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to burial-cases having removable covers, and has for its object the production of clamping means for the covers, which is particularly simple in construction and highly effective in use; and to this end it consists in the novel combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a burial-case, one of its clamps being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the means illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of the detached clamp seen in Figs. 1 and 2, portions of the case being shown as engaged by said clamp. Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 1, a modified construction of clamp being illustrated.
1 and 2 are, respectively, the body, and the cover of a burial-ease. The body 1 is provided with an outwardly extending flange 3 preferably formed by bending the metal at the upper part of the body outwardly, downwardly, and inwardly. Said cover rests upon, and is supported by, the flange 3, and is provided with a depending flange 4 engaged with the outer edge of said flange 3. The cover 2 is held in position by a plurality of clamps of similar construction, each comprising two elements, one a base 5 fixed to the body 1 beneath the flange 3, and the other a clamping member 6 adjustable relatively to the base 5 and coacting with the upper surface of the cover 2. An arm 7 projects laterally from the base 5 beneath the flange 3, and is provided with an upturned extension 8 which is arranged at the outer side of a line perpendicular to the outer edge of the flange 8, said extension projecting above the flange 8, and being formed with a threaded upper end 9. Said base 5 is formed with an extension 10 projecting above the arm 7 and increasing upwardly in width, the upper ed e 11 of the extension 10 being engaged Specification of Letters Yatent.

with the lower face of the flange 3. A rivet or other securing means 12 is passed through the lower part of the base 5, and the opposing portion of the wall of the body 1, and serves to securely hold the base 5 in position, this result being facilitated by the engagement of the relatively long edge 11 with the lower face of the flange 3. The clamping member 6 is arranged above the cover 2, substantially parallel to the arm 7, and one end of the clamping member is formed with an internally-threaded eye 13 which receives the circular threaded end or part 9, and the other end of said member is formed with. an upturned finger-piece 14. The portion of the clamping member directly above the extension 10 of the base is provided with a lug 15 movable eccentrically relatively to the axis of the clamping member and formed with an inclined face 16 arranged at an angle to, and coacting with, the portion of the surface of the cover 2 directly above the extension 10, such clamping face being spaced apart from the axis of the spindle S and eye 13, and movable eccentrically relatively to said axis. By turning the clamping member in opposite directions, the face 16 is forced into, and out of, engagement with the cover for clamping and releasing the same.
In the preferable construction of this in vention, the extension 8 inclines upwardly in one direction toward the opposing surface 17 of the body 1, as seen in Fig. 1, and inclines upwardly in another direction to ward the surface 18 of the body disposed at substantially a right angle to the surface 17 as illustrated in Fig. 2. In other words the spindle 8 inclines upwardly toward the body and in the direction of the turning move ment of the member 6 into operative position. The extension 8 thus inclines in two directions relatively to the opposing surfaces of the body 1 and the cover 2. When the clamping member 6 is moved from the outer side of the burial-case into operative position, as indicated in Fig. 1. the inclination of the extension 8 causes the face 16 to approach the upper surface of the cover 2 more quickly than would otherwise be the case, and to bind against the same to a maximum extent. As indicated in Fig. 4, instead of forming the threaded extension of the clamp upon the base 5, it may be provided upon the clamping member, and the inteinally-threaded eye for receiving such extension may be formed in the free end of the arm 7 projecting laterally from said base.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. In a case the combination with a body and a cover; of a clamp comprising two elements, one a base fixed to one of the parts of the case and the other a clamping member movable toward and from the other of the parts of the case, one of said elements having an upright threaded spindle spaced apart from the body and the other having a threaded eye for receiving the spindle, the clamping member being movable about the axis of the spindle and eye into and out of operative position and having an engaging face spaced apart from said axis, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a case, the combination with a. body and a cover; of a clamp comprising two elements, one a base fixed to one of the parts of the case, and the other a clamping member movable toward and from the other of the parts of the case, one of said elements having an upright threaded spindle spaced apart from the body and the other having a threaded eye for receiving the spindle, the spindle and said eye being arranged with their axes inclining out of a vertical plane toward the body and in the direction of turning movement of the clamping member into operative position, the clamping member being movable about the axis of the spindle and eye into and out of operative position and having an engaging face spaced apart from said axis, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a case, the combination with a. body and a cover; of a clamp comprising a base fixedito the body and provided with a lateral arm, and a clamping member for the cover movable toward and from the cover, the clamping member being normally arranged in a plane substantially parallel to the arm, and the clamping member and the arm being connected by a threaded spindle associated with one of the connected parts and an eye for receiving the spindle formed in the other of the connected parts, the spindle being inclined out of a vertical plane toward the body and in the direction of the turning movement of the clamping member into operative position, and the clamping member being movable about the axis of the spindle and the eye toward and from the cover and having an engaging face which moves eccentrically to the spindle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
a In a case, the combination with a body and a cover, of a clamp comprising two elements, one a base fixed to one of the parts of the case, and the other a clamping member movable toward and from the other of the parts of the case, one of said elements having an upright threaded spindle spaced apart from the body and the other having a threaded eye for receiving the spindle, the spindle and said eye being arranged with their axes inclining out of a vertical plane toward the body and in the direction of the turning movement of the clamping member into operative position, the clamping memher being movable about the axis of the spindle and eye into and out ofoperative position and having an engaging face spaced apart from said axis which face moves eccentrically to the spindle, such engaging face being inclined out of a plane parallel to the surface with which such engaging face coacts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
