PATENT OFFICE.
COUNTER-SUPPORT.
SEIEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters .IPatent No. 729,761, dated June 2, 1903. Application filed August 12,1902. Serial No. 119,436: (No model.)
To (ti/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY I-IA LAND, a citizen of Canada, residing at Goderich,in the county of Huron, Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in OountenSupports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boot and shoe counter supports-11 c. devices having fangs adapted to be secured in the heels of boots and shoes and body portions shaped to rest at the sides of the counters thereof with a view of preventing the counters being forced out of shape incident to wear of the boots and shoes.
The invention consists in a certain peculiar counter support the novelty, utility, and practical advantages of which willbe fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a shoe equipped with one of my improved counter-supports. Fig. 2 is atransverse section taken on the broken line 2 2 of Fig. 1, with one of the tangs of the support partly in elevation; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the counter-support removed. A
Referring by letter to said drawings, A is the counter, and B the heel, of a shoe, and G is my improved counter-support. This sup port is formed of one piece of iron or other suitable metal, and consists, essentially, of a flat body a, the lower end of which is increased in thickness to form an exterior shoulder 12, and parallel tangs c, which extend downwardly and inwardly from the lower end of the body and in conjunction with said body describe an approximate obtuse angle. The tangs 0 describe a left-hand curve in the direction of their length, as best shown in Fig. 2, and consequently they are enabled when driven into the heel B by hammer-blows applied to the shoulder I) to draw the body a up firmly against the counter A, so as to enable said body a to properly support the counter and hold the same against outward movement. The left hand curvature of the tangs c in the direction of their length is also advantageous, since when they are driven into a heel they are not liable to work loose, and hence do not have to be clenched, as do the straight tangs of the counter-supports extant.
My improved supports are adapted to be applied to either or both sides of the counter of a boot or shoe, and they are obviously cal-- the herein-described counter supp ort, formed of one piece of metal, and consisting essen* tially of the flat body at having the exterior shoulder 11 at its lower end, and the parallel tangs e .which in conjunction with the body describe an approximate obtuse angle, and which describe a left-hand curve in the di' rection of and throughout their length.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
