To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARCUS M. BAR'rLnirT, a. citizen ofthe United States, residing at lVinsted, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scythes, of which the following is a specification, reference be'ing had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in scythes, particularly with reference to the construction of the scythe blade, and to the combination therewith of a tang and back support for lattachment to the heel end of the blade, one object of the invention being to effect means in the construction of the blade whereby the same is rendered eX- tremely strong and durable, while being light and requiring but a minimum quantity of material in its construction, another ob- `iect 0f the invention being to provide an improved form of tang and back support for the heel end of the blade.
My invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the heel portion of a Scythe blade constructed in accordance with my invention, and also showing my improved tang and back support in connection therewith. Fig. 2 'is a transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line 5 6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line @-0 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail inverted perspective view of a portion of the back support and tang.
In accord-ance with my invention, the Scythe blade 1 is made of sheet steel, and is formed at its rear edge with an upwardly extending inclined flange 2, and on its under side with a strengthening bead', the front face of which converges downwardly and rearwardly to the back flange 2, a substantially V-shaped channel 4 being formed in the upper side of the blade at the back flange 2. The web 5 of the blade is gradually narrowed toward its front edge, the front edge being sharpened as jusual. By thus forming the blade with the integral back flange and bead, the blade is rendered extremely strong and durable, the flange and the bead coacting to strengthen the Specification of Letters Patent.

In connection with my improved scythe blade, I also provide a combined tang andl back support comprising an arm 6 to bear on the blade at the heel end thereof, and the tang 7 which extends forwardly from and 'is united to the outer end of the said arm 6. 'Ihe arm 6 has itsrear edge curved and adapted to fit against the front side of the back flange 2 of the blade, and is also provided at its rear edge with a downwardly extending V-shaped tongue or rib 8 which fits in the channel 4, the web 9 of the said arm bearing on the web of the blade and being widened as at 10 at the heel end of the blade. In the angle between the arm 6 and the tang 7, and on the under side of the -arm 6, is a transverse shoulder 11 which bears snugly against the heel end of the scythe blade, a shoulder 12 being formed on the rear side of the back and which bears against the heel end of the back flange 2 of the scythe blade.
The combined back and tang are in practice preferably made of iron to reduce the cost of the construction of the scythe.
In practice the back is secured to the heel end of the blade by any suitable means. It will be understood that the back in addition to carrying the tang for the attachment of the handle, also serves to materially strengthen the blade of the scythe.
I claim 1. The herein described scythe blade having al longitudinal back flange, a bead on its under side at its rear edge substantially parallel with said flange, and united to the said back flange, said blade having a channel in the upper side of the scythe blade immedi ately in front of the said back flange opposite sa'id bead, in combination with a back secured on the upper side of the blade, the said back having a tang and an arm, the said arm bearing on the heel portion of the scythe blade, and against the back flange thereof, and also having a bead or rib en-Y gaging the said channel, the said back being further provided with a shoulder on its under side bearing against the heel end of the blade, and with a shoulder on its rear side bearing against the heel end of the back flange of the blade.
