TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;

Be it known that.I, DANIEL BULL, of Amboy, in the county of Lec, and State of Illinois, have inventcda new and useful Improved Table-Leaf Supporter; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andthe letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specication.

'My said invention consists in a novel device for supporting the leaves of table, it being constructed and arranged, with respect to the table-leaf and the rail of the table, in such a manner that, upon raising up the leaf, the support setsitself'in the proper position to sustain the leaf automatically, while, by a simple and easy adjustment, it can be unset to allow the leaf to fold down as desired.

To enable those skilled in the artsto understand how'to make, apply, and use my invention, I will now describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which@ Figure 1 represents a side view of the same.

Similar letters of reference in the several figures denote the same parts of my invention.

'I represents an ordinary table, L the leaf of the same, and R the rail. A represents the brace or supportingarm, which is constructed in form of a link, as shown in fig. 2, and may be made of wire, of any suitable size, or of other material, as preferred. Said link is secured at one end by means of a clasp, D, to the rail R, so as to have a free motion at that point as upon a hinge, the clasp B being secured to the rail by screws,`or their equivalent, marked b b. D represents a metallic bar, which is secured to the leaf, as shown .by screws C, passing through slots d in said bar D, which is formed with a recess Vupon its upper side, to receive one end of the link A, as shown, which slides valong in said recess when the leaf is folded or turned down, and which is prevented from sliding, when the leaf is set, by a bar orstop, E, as is clearly shown in Eg. 1.' The said'bar E is provided with a pin or projection, m, which enters a corresponding recess or groove in thc bar D, marked Z, which prevents any longitudinal displacement of said bar E,while its opposite forked end, as seen in fig. 3, at g, strides a point or spur,f, on the bar D, which prevents any lateral displacement of said bar E. In fig. 1, the red lines show the position of the parts when the leaf isturned down. When the leaf is raised, the end of the link A slides to the end of the recess in the bar D, and lies beneath the spurf, passing fronibeneath the end of the bar E, which then automatically, of its own weight, drops down and locks the link A beneath the spurf, which thus prevents the link from passing above the bar E, and so sets the leaf firmly and securely as desired. The forked end of the bar E is made a trifle thicker than the space between the spurf and the lower bar D, so that vwhen the bar E is in the position shown in iig. 1, it is s till prevented from slipping out at either side from its place in the recess inthe bar D. At c c the bar D is made thinner and the bar E wider than at other points, so as to permit a person to readily press the bar E upward with the thumb and linger, or otherwise, to unlock the support and permit the leaf tobe turned down, as'inflicated by the red lines in iig. I. Should the leaf become warped, or should it sag down from the desired horizontal position, the bnr D may be adjustedso as to correct such diiliculty, by moving it to make the required adaptation, thel slots d being designed to admit of such adjustment. Instead of having a link, A, enclosing a bar, D, a bar may be used instead of a link, moving in a slot in the bar D', having some-suitable provision to retain such bar in the slot, as thc mechanical operation would be the same in either case.

Having described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I will `now proceed to specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent. i

I. I claim the combination of a link, A, a recessed bar, D, provided lwith a spur,f, and a movable stonbar, E, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. I claim the combinationof the bar D, or its equivalent, provided with the spurf and the movable bar E, provided with the prong or fork g g, arranged in the manner and for the purposes described.

3. I claim the recess Zin the bar D, and the projection m on the bar E, arranged substantially as'specitied, to prevent the longitudinal displacement ofthe bnr E, as described-and shown.

4. I claim providing the bar D with slots cZ d, to admit of the adjustment thereof, as and for the purposes specified.
