Description

' Quinn gist; item: @ffiees D. s. HUMPHREY, OF EAST TOWNSEND, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 72,856, dated December 31, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT Iii-FENCE AND TBELLIS-HOOK.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, D. S. HUMPIIREY, of East Townsend, in the county of Huron, and State of Ohio, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence and Trellis-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, 'efcrencc being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which 7 Figure 1 gives perspective views of diiierent-sized hooks.
Figure 2 is a view showing the relative position of the hooks in the plate from which they are cut.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the diiferent views presented.
This invention consists in so constructing a hook, that the head of the same is formed on one side of the shaft or shunk, and so shaped as to form a hook, so that on being driven into a board 01' post, said hook will embrace a wire or rod and thereby hold it in place, and thus dispense with the use of a staple for that purpose.
In fig. 1, A represents; the shaft or stem of the hook, which, it will be seen, is of a uniform thickness from the head to the point, but tapering from the throat or hook to the end, which, it will be observed, is made roundechin order that it may the more easily penetrate the wood, which, on being driven into the same until the lip C strikes the board, will leave an opening between the wood and head, through which a wire may be threaded, or the wire first placed in position and the hook drawn in so as to secure it.
The manner of manufacturing these hooks is as follows, viz: A piece of plate-metal of the required thickness, and of a width proper for the length of the spike, is prepared, and from which is cut by an appropriate die each hook, the rounded point of one stem forming the throat of the hook of the other from which it is cut. The relative position of the two hooks of equal length is shown in fig. 2, in which it will be seen that the rounded point of one fits into the throat of the other, thus economizing the material in the manufacture, and which may be done in the ordinary nail-machine.
- The special purpose of this hook is for supporting the wires used in the construction of wire fences, grape trellises, &c., but which is also equally applicable to all analogous purposes.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A cut hook-headed spike or nail, constructed as described, and for the purpose specified, as-a new article of manufacture.
D. S. HUMPI-IBEY.
