CORN-HUSKING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,113, dated May 12,1903.
Application filed. December 24, 1902. Serial No. 136,487. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK D. KEES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corn-Husking Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful im-- provements in corn-husking implements; and its object is to provide a simple device of inexpensive construction which may be readily attached to the hand and wrist of the operator and which is so constructed as to firmly grasp the husks engaged thereby and hold them as long as desired during the operation of husking.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in providing a wristband, to the front edge of which is secured a plate adapted to embrace andrest upon the palm of the hand and to be securedthereto. The sides of this plate are curved upward, and arranged between these sides is a hook, the prongs of which are eccentric with the curved face of the plate, whereby when husks' are drawn under said hook the same are clamped upon the upwardly-turned edges and securely held therein.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective viewof my improved husking device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the plate and the hook thereon, and Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a band adapted to be secured to the wrist of the operator by means of straps 2, secured at one end thereof and adapted to To the forward edgeof'this band is secured a plate 4, which conforms to the curvature of the palm of the operator and has upwardlycurved side edges 5. A laterally-extending arm 6 is arranged at the outer end of this plate and is so curved as to embrace one edge of the hand at a point between the thumb and first finger. This arm is secured in such position by means of a strap 7 fastened theret0, having a buckle 8 adapted to be engaged by the opposite end 9 of the strap, which extends from the opposite side of the plate. Riveted or otherwise secured to the upper face of the plate 4 is an 'angular plate 10, having inwardly-extending prongs 11 forming a recess therebetween, said prongs being located between the upwardly-turned edges 5 and eccentric therewith.
In operation the device is secured to the hand of the operator in the manner described, and after the ear of corn has been grasped in the other hand the prongs 11 are forced into the husks, and the curved edges 5 serve the purpose of cams and force the husks against the under surfaces of said prongs and clamp them in such position. The husks are thus held until the car has been sufficiently exposed, when by drawing the husks longitudi- 'nally*they may be readily withdrawn from under the prongs.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new i's 1. In a corn-husking implement, the combination with a band, and means for securing said band to the wrist of' an operator;. of a plate extending from the band, upwardlycurved cam edges thereto, a hook arranged between the edges and eccentric therewith, whereby husks maybe clamped between it and the edges of the plate for engagement by the hook, and means for securing the outer end of the plate to the hand of the'operator.
2. In a corn-huskingimplement, the combination with a band, and means for securing the same to a wrist of an operator; of a outer end of the plate to the hand of the 0pplate extending from said band and conformerator. 1o ing with the curvature of the palm of the op- In testimony whereof I affix my signature erator, a hook secured to and extending over in presence of two Witnesses.
