COLLAR-BUTTON.

Be it known that I, MARSHALL H. MALLoRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bridgeport, Fairfield county, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in. collar-buttons, and has for its object the production of a button which will cause the collar and the neckband of the shirt to be retained at all times in a fixed position, thus obviating the drawing apart or closing together of the same under longitudinal pressure and also preventing the rotation about the shank.

The buttonholes in both the neckband of the shirt and in the collar arecomparatively long in order to permit the head of the collarbutton to pass through. The post or shank of the button as compared with the diameter of the head or the length of the buttonhole has always been comparatively small longitudinally. The result of this combination has been that when longitudinal pressure is applied to either the neckband or the collar, or bothfor instance, in drawing a tie tightly about the collarthe ends of each draw together, slipping or playing on the shank of the collar-button until the extreme end of each buttonhole presses against the shank. This is a source of annoyance and discomfort to the wearer, as no matter how carefully the garment may have been fitted the drawing together referred to materially changes the fit and disarranges the relation of the parts. By my invention I have obviated this difiiculty and have produced an article both simple and effective, which permits very little, if any, play to either the neckband or the collar.

In the following, with reference to the accompanying drawings, I have described a structure embodying my invention, the features thereof being more particularly set forth hereinafter in the claims.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of my improved collar-button. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a side view, of the same. Fig. 4 is a side view showing a modification of the head, and Fig. 5 a front elevation showing a modification of the shank.

My invention consists in making the post or shank b broad, fiat, and thin and of approximately the length of the buttonhole in the neckband or collar, thus diminishing the play of the same by the width of the shank. Buttonholes generally correspond in size and can therefore receive the same button. The shank should be alittle less in breadth than the length of the bnttonhole for easy insertion therein, and thus can be inserted only lengthwise of the hole and cannot be turned afterward. I prefer to slightly incline the sides of the shank outwardly from the base, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, so as to permit of a slight freedom of movement in the insertion and removal of the button; but such inclination is not essential. The shank may extend in height to the bottom of the head or higher on either side thereof, as shown in Fig. 5, in order to prevent the garment slipping over the head of the button, or the head itself may be curved downwardly or turned downwardly on each side of the shank, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to more effectually press and retain the garment on the shank.

The breadth of the shank should preferably be at least equal to the diameter of the head and should approximate the length of the buttouhole, so as to fill the buttonhole, or nearly so, and avoid the side movement or play of neckband and collar and also avoid rotation.

In the form illustrated in the drawings the diameter of the head 0 transverse to the shank b is longer than the diameter of the head which extends in the direction of the breadth of the shank. In such button the shorter diameter of the head is confined within the breadth of the shank; but the breadth of the shankb is as great or greater than the longer or transverse diameter of the head 0.

It is obvious that the dimensions or arrangement of parts may be considerably altered without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not restrict myself to the details shown.

Having described my invention and the manner in which the same is to be performed, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. A collar-button havingabase,shank and head, the shank being broad and substantially flat and of a breadth at least as great as any dimension of the head.

2. A co11ar-button havinga base,shank and head, said head having its longest dimenxo sion transverse to the breadth of the shank,

said shank being broad and substantially flat, and of a breadth at least as great as the longest dimension of the head.
