" WARREN DAVID WALKER, on MALONE, NEW YORK.
l=lUB=ATTACHlNG DEWCE.
$PEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,383, dated April 28, 1903.
Application filed September 8,1902. Serial No. 122,590. (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN DAVID VVAL- KER, a citizen of Great Britain, residing atMalone, in the county of Franklin and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hub-Attaching Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a hub-attaching device that comprises an axle skein and box of novel construction.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whichis simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and durable in use and one in which the hub will be securely retained on the axle and the wear on the spindle reduced to a minimum.
With this and other objects, which will appear as the nature of the device is better understood, it further consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in WhlGll-.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the right-hand end of an axle with the box mounted thereon, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same.
Referring to the figures in the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a metal axle formed with the spindle 2, having the reduced screw threaded end 3. 4. designates the axle-skein, which fits the axle snugly and is retained in position by its threaded portion 5 engaging the threaded end 3 of the axle. Before the skein is placed in position the loose sleeve or capnut 6 and the washer 7 are first slipped on the axle. The cap-nut 6 is provided with a square end 8, adapted to be engaged by a wrench, and a screw-threaded portion 9,which is adapted to be screwed into the threaded portion 10 of the axle-box 11, which may be secured in the Wooden hub of the wheel in any desired manner, but preferably by means of the nut 14, screwed on the outer end of the box. The box rotates upon the skein a and has its outer end closed and formed on the inside with an oil recess or chamber 12.
The skein may also be provided with oil-re cesses 13.
When the parts are assembled as seen in Fig. 2, it will be observed that as the skein 4. is secured to the spindle it retains the capnut 6 on the spindle and allows it to rotate freely and that as the box 11 is secured to the cap-nut 6 and rotates on the skein 4 the hub will be securely held on the axle.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation. v
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hub-attaching device, the combination with a spindle, of a skein secured to said spindle, a box inclosing said skein and spindle and adapted to rotate on said skein, a cap-nut loosely mounted on said spindle and secured to said box, and a washer interposed between said cap-nut and skein, substantially as set forth.
2. In a hub-attaching device, the combination with a spindle formed with a reduced screw-threaded end, of a skein having a screw threaded engagement therewith and having oil-recesses formed therein, an axle-box inclosing said skein and spindle and provided with an oil-recess in its closed outer end, a washer on said spindle, and a cap-nut mounted to to rn freely on said spindle and retained thereon by the said skein and having a screwthreaded engagement with said axle-box,substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
WARREN DAVID WALKER.
