SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,763, dated December 24, 1901. Application filed April 26, 1901. Serial No. 57,617. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Sco'rr TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glaremore, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same.
My invention pertains to improvements in axle-spindles for vehicles of any character, wheel-plows, trucks, &c.
It has for its object, primarily, to effectually exclude dust or dirt, &c., and prevent the escape or oozing away of the axle or spindle grease or lubricant, while it is simple and cheap in construction and is capable of ready application to any kind of axle, of wood or metal, and of being readily adjusted or shifted axially, as would be required in compensating unevenness from wear, to.
It consists of a spindle, preferably with an oval shoulder or enlargement thereon, adaptz 5 ed to be inserted into a boxing, with a shoulder adapted to engage the aforesaid shoulder, and a bushing or sleeve adapted to be slipped upon said spindle and to engage said boxing and said spindle shoulder or enlargement,
0 with a ratchet or notches thereon, engaged by a retaining pawl or detent hung upon the wheel-hub, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a view showing the same applied for use. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detached perspective views of the constituent parts of the 0 invention.

in carrying out my invention I provide a suitable boxing 1, adapted to be secured in a wheel-hub in any known way. This boxing has a bore of different diameters, thus providing it with an internal shoulder 2 inter- 5o mediately of its length. Within said boxing or closure is inserted the spindle 3, having a preferably oval shoulder 3, adapted to snugly abut said internal shoulder of said boxing to limit the insertion of said spindle and lessen friction between the parts. Slipped over said spindle is a bushing or sleeve 4, entering said boxing, with its inclosed end internally beveled or concave'd, as at 4: to enable it to snugly or fiushly fit the shoulder 2 of said boxing, limiting the insertion of said bushing. Said bushing has an external screw thread 4 to engage an internal screw-thread of the wheel-hub, to secure it removably in place therein. It has also upon its exterior, at its uninclosed end, a ratchet or circular series of notches 4, with which is adapted to engage a pawl or detent 5, hung from the end of the wheel-hub to provide for holding said bushing against turning or unscrewing, thus preventing its possible accidental displacement.
From the foregoing it will have been seen that the advantages set up in behalf of my invention in the prelude or statement of the 7 5 objects thereof have been fully disclosed or borne out.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. A device of the character described, comprising a boxing or closure having an internal beveled or concaved shoulder or enlargement intermediately of its ends, an axle or spindle having a shoulder or enlargement engaging said internal shoulder of said boxing,
a bushing or sleeve having its inner end provided with a concavity oppositely engaging said shoulder of said axle or spindle, and its outer surface, near the opposite end, pro- 96 vided with a ratchet, and a dog or ratchet hung upon the wheel hub and engaging sai ratchet, substantially as setforth.
